Managing limb sensitivity is an important part of preparing your residual limb for prosthetic use. Here are four simple techniques you can practice at home to help calm tenderness and build comfort over time:

• Massage – gentle pressure increases circulation and reduces tightness
• Tapping – light, rhythmic tapping helps your nerves adapt to new sensations
• Desensitization – use different textures (cloth, cotton ball, towel) to gradually decrease sensitivity
• Scar mobilization – slow movement around the scar helps prevent adhesions and improves mobility

Adjustments are a natural part of prosthetic care. Over time, your limb may change shape or volume, especially within the first year of use. Routine visits allow your prosthetist to refine the fit, alignment, or suspension system for optimal comfort and function.

Your prosthesis should work with you — not against you.

Meet Tim — Co-Owner of Next Step Prosthetics Ohio and an ABC-Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist with over 30 years in the O&P field. Tim specializes in upper extremity prosthetics but can do it all! Inspired by his sister’s limb loss, Tim is passionate about finding innovative solutions to help every patient achieve comfort, confidence, and freedom.
