Happy Valentine's Day!❤️ Get to know Close to Home site directors, Shaun and Candace Coffman. They both started as physical therapists with the Sports and Orthopedic Physical Therapy Team over 14 years ago. Today, they’re married and are still supporting each other’s careers!

They met in physical therapy grad school and Ohio University and got married shortly after graduating. Candace started working at Nationwide Children’s Hospital after graduation and immediately fell in love with the One Team culture. Because of this, she encouraged Shaun to also apply for a physical therapy position within the hospital!

They shared, “We’ve both been in the same roles across the organization for the last 14 years from staff physical therapist to clinical lead to site director. Because of this, we can really understand and share in the challenges and successes that come with all of those roles.

We both encourage each other to seek opportunities that challenge us and build new skill sets. We feel very fortunate to have a partner to bounce ideas off of and who can really relate to the work we do.”

Meet Katelynn and Mason! They both work at Nationwide Children's Hospital and are celebrating their first Valentine's as a married couple.❤️

Katelynn works on the social media team and Mason works in building operations and maintenance. We asked this couple what they enjoy about both working at Nationwide Children’s Hospital!

Katelynn shared, “We’re each other’s biggest fans and are genuinely invested in one another’s success. We understand the demands of each other’s jobs, which allows us to be flexible, encouraging and present when one of us needs extra support. We make it a point to be present and intentional in lifting each other up.”

Mason’s role in building operations and maintenance is hands-on and focused on ensuring the hospital is a safe, functional environment for patients, families and staff. Katelynn loves the fast-paced nature of her role, spending her days creating, writing and monitoring social channels. They shared “While our day-to-day looks very different, both roles support the same mission.”

Marco and Wynola perfectly show the lasting impact of a relationship between a patient and their care team!🦋

In 1965, Marco was admitted to Nationwide Children's Hospital’s burn unit. Starting as a 15-month old patient, Marco would sometimes have multiple surgeries a year throughout his childhood.

During this time, Wynola served as a nurse on his care team and is still caring for patients at Nationwide Children's 60 years later! She shared, “One outstanding memory was the sight of his lips and eyes surrounded by the burn dressings. There was such an amazing warmth and hopeful expression in his eyes that made me feel connected to him.”

Wynola shared, “During the nursing experience on the burn unit, I found out I was expecting and took a leave of absence. During the maternity leave, I reflected on my caring for Marco, and remembering his strength and perseverance, I named my first-born ‘Marc.’”

Today, Marco still annually donates toys and joy to The Burn Center! He stated, “In the late 90's I was talking with my mother, we spoke about the many different stays in the hospital, the different surgeries and it was at that time that it hit me: I wanted to give back to the hospital and give the children there something to make their stay just a little easier, the day just a little brighter and the pain just a little less painful.”

Marco and Wynola were able to reconnect as adults, when Marco moved into her neighborhood. Wynola noted, “This lifelong experience is a wonderful gift and I will never take it for granted. Marco and his wife are truly giving individuals.”
