Empowering Kids Pediatric Therapy Empowering Kids Pediatric Therapy is a private practice owned and operated by Melissa Philippsen.

Empowering Kids Pediatric Therapy offers a fun and welcoming environment geared toward assisting your child in achieving their Speech, Language, and Fine Motor skill goals. Our goal is to individually work with your child in order to best support him or her in achieving their communication and fine motor skill potential. We use play based therapy to keep your child engaged and encourage generalization of skills to his/her natural environment. Our team is dedicated to creating a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment for your child. It is our goal to provide your child with high quality, individualized therapy sessions. We are honored to work with children in our community to achieve their highest potential in their speech, language and fine motor skills. Our speech and occupational therapists will engage your child in a friendly, fun way as they challenge them to work towards their goals. We enjoy working alongside families in order to teach them strategies to use at home, so that the child can work on their skills throughout the week, and make gains more quickly.

Happy Nonspeaking Awareness Day!

Nonspeaking does NOT mean non-hearing, non-listening or unintelligent.

Many children can share their thoughts with other means- an AAC device, sign language, or by writing them.

Today is Nonspeaking Awareness Day! 💙

At The Apraxia Foundation, we believe every form of communication is valid… spoken, signed, AAC, and beyond. To honor this day, we’re setting a fundraising goal of $150 to help sponsor one of our AAC grants next month.

Your support means more children with childhood apraxia of speech will have access to the tools they need to communicate, connect, and be heard.

If we raise enough, you’ll be helping another child with apraxia receive life-changing AAC support next month. 🌟

Donate, share, and celebrate all voices today.

Reading books with your children is SO important to their developing brain!

As Meaghan Cox Gurdon says in her book, “listening to stories while looking at pictures stimulates children’s deep brain networks, fostering their optimal cognitive development. Further, the companionable experience of shared reading cultivates empathy, dramatically accelerates young children’s language acquisition, and vaults them ahead of their peers when they get to school. The rewards of early reading are astonishingly meaningful: toddlers who have lots of stories read to them turn into children who are more likely to enjoy strong relationships, sharper focus, and greater emotional resilience and self-mastery."

Great graphic to show how we can encourage children to move in order to help them to regulate their body. Is your child feeling low-energy despite being fed and having a good night sleep? Try some of these to help them to wake their body up! Is your child fidgeting and can't sit still? Try some of these and see how it helps them to redirect their energy and calm their body. Thanks The OT Toolbox for sharing!

Vestibular input is a type of movement is a powerful tool in therapy and at home. It can calm or excite, depending on the individual/time/movement/environment/sensory need. Vestibular sensory input can be alerting or calming to our nervous systems, allowing us to learn, interact with others, and go through our day.

We have a blog post that explains everything you need to know about vestibular processing and the vestibular system. Let’s move! https://www.theottoolbox.com/vestibular-activities/
