I ran into my friend and former classmate Dr. Angela Lang at the ILCA Conference in Tampa, Florida. Angela and I began our lactation careers together many years ago! ICYMI, I had her on the podcast back in October 2024. We talked all about innovations in lactation support around pumping.

I saw a poster at the ILCA Conference in Tampa that stopped me in my tracks.

It wasn’t about latch.
It wasn’t about supply.
It wasn’t about pumps.

It was about who actually becomes an IBCLC.

In this week’s episode of Behind the Latch, I sit down with Dr. Mandy Golman to talk about her research on the barriers and facilitators to obtaining the IBCLC certification in the United States — and what that means for equity in our field.

We talk about:

✨ Why the credential “adds weight” professionally — but often not financially
✨ The hidden costs of certification (unpaid hours, childcare, lost wages)
✨ Why mentorship may be the biggest bottleneck in the IBCLC pipeline
✨ The persistent bias that IBCLCs must also be RNs
✨ Why workforce diversity is foundational to breastfeeding equity

If we care about access to lactation care, we have to care about who is able to enter this profession.

This conversation is honest, structural, and necessary.

And if you’re a student, mentor, or IBCLC — I especially want to hear your thoughts.

Ask Me Anything: Pumping for Twins Edition

Pumping for one baby is a full-time job.

Pumping for twins?
It’s logistics. It’s physiology. It’s stamina. It’s strategy.

If you’re wondering:

• Do I need a hospital-grade pump?
• How often do I pump to build supply for two?
• What’s a realistic milk volume goal?
• Can I exclusively pump for twins long-term?
• How do I protect supply if one baby latches and the other doesn’t?
• What if one twin is in the NICU?

Drop your questions below 👇 or send me a DM and I’ll answer them in this series.

Whether you’re a parent in the thick of it or an IBCLC supporting a twin dyad, let’s talk about what actually works — physiologically and practically.

Ask me anything.

Ask Me Anything: Triple Feeding Edition

Triple feeding is one of the most exhausting plans I see families on.

Breastfeed.
Pump.
Bottle.
Repeat.
Around the clock.

It can be lifesaving in the short term — but it is not meant to be forever.

If you’re wondering:

• When is it safe to start weaning from triple feeding?
• Which session do I drop first?
• How do I protect milk supply while reducing pumping?
• What if baby isn’t transferring enough yet?
• How do I know we’re ready?

Drop your questions below 👇 or send me a DM and I’ll answer them in this series.

Whether you’re a parent navigating it right now or an IBCLC supporting a dyad through it, let’s talk about how to move from survival mode to sustainable feeding.

Ask me anything.

In this week’s episode of Behind the Latch, I talk with Indira Lopez-Bassols, IBCLC, who published in the Journal of Human Lactation — without a PhD, without an academic appointment, and in her third language.

Her advice from a journal editor?

“Just write them.”

We talk about the three moments that moved her from reader to author, the cleft lip and palate case that changed everything, and why wonder — yes, wonder — is the essential ingredient for writing a case study.

If you are an IBCLC who has ever witnessed something powerful in your clinical work and thought, someone should write about this… this episode is your nudge.

Our field is still growing. We need clinicians at the table. We need your stories.
