We’re providing more updates about the STATBI project regarding grade at injury. This project specifically works with families of children that have experienced a at any time point and are enrolled in formal schooling at the time they begin participating.

This pie chart showcases that 39% of our participants experienced their TBI in high school (9th - 12th grade), 27% in middle school (6th - 8th grade), 25% in elementary school (Kindergarten - 5th grade), 3% in preschool, and 6% before formal schooling. We are thrilled to have representation across the grades!

As we approach the end of our recruitment process, we will be sure to keep our communities engaged and up to date on our progress. Follow us for more information!

Here’s another update wrapping up the 23-24 school year!

Understanding the severity of injury is vital to interpreting the results of the STATBI study! In our study, 63% of our participants have a credible history of mild/concussion with persistent symptoms, 15% have moderate injury and 22% with severe injury!

Injury severity has been shown to be one of key ingredients for different social, behavioral and health outcomes after a TBI. We will continue to provide more stats and updates from the STATBI project; follow us for more!

As we continue to make use of our platform to provide information about brain injuries, it is vital to specify that some ’s may look different for girls compared to boys.

For girls, they may experience sports-related concussions differently than boys. Primarily, girls are more at risk for experiencing a concussion in sports such as basketball and soccer. Girls are also more likely to report that their concussion symptoms are severe and long-lasting. The STATBI lab is actively working with different children and families to learn the outcomes of a TBI, across different groups. Just a few more days of Brain Injury Awareness Month — keep an eye out here to learn more about brain injuries and dm us if you are interested in participating in our project!

That STATBI lab is eager to share some more facts regarding during Brain Injury Awareness Month!

For youth that have experienced a , and specifically a concussion, it is very common to have symptoms that are linked to mental health concerns such as feeling more anxious, irritable, etc.

Some ways to potentially lower the risk of emotional challenges is by talking through feelings, staying active and going outside, and providing/receiving encouragement during the recovery journey! Learn more at the listed link or check out our story for more info!

It’s important that we acknowledge and research concussions, especially in youth! Check out the CDC’s infographic for different rates by sport. You’ll see that Boys’ tackle football is ranked #1 and that tackling is responsible for 63% of concussions in high school football. More than half! Girls soccer comes in at #2!

It is vital that after a concussion, children not only take a break from sports but that they get the proper resources to transition back to school! Learn more at the listed link and if you or someone you know has experienced a tbi, feel free to dm us about how to participate in our study! 🙌🏾

The STATBI lab is eager to meet more families as we head into our last 6-8 months of recruitment!
We are looking at the differences in social, academic & health outcomes between children in grades K-12 who have experienced a traumatic brain injury that participate in formal return to school services versus those that do not.

If you or someone you know would be interested in participating in the STATBI study, feel free to reach out to one of our lab members, we look forward to hearing from you!

In the STATBI lab, we have the pleasure of different student research assistants working on our projects! They have been with us for a range of time between 8 months to even 2 years! It is so great to have their hands in this project to learn about research but MOST importantly to learn about .

Our RA’s often work on transcribing our research interviews which gives them a chance to learn about the impact of TBI. As we wrap up 2023, we asked them about their experiences. Many of them told us they feel as though being in the STATBI lab
- contributes to their skillset(s) as a next generation professionals
- they may now want to specialize in working with children and families
- they understand firsthand some of the effects of TBI’s
- acquired a deeper understanding of the research and TBI overall

Check out some of these quotes directly from our RA’s!”

NPR has presented us with an interview surrounding traumatic brain injury research provided by “All Things Considered,” entitled A small study offers hope for people with traumatic brain injuries. This interview gives insight from a tbi survivor and discusses a study suggesting that deep brain stimulation can improve focus and attention in people recovering from a traumatic brain injury.

Here are a few quotes from the interview shedding light on what it’s like to live with a tbi, and how proper research could aid in benefitting the lives of this population. Check out our story to listen to the full interview from NPR!
