Late winter and early spring are the times to prune fruit trees, including apple and pear trees!๐ŸŽ๐Ÿโœ‚๏ธ

The best approach to pruning all fruit trees is to begin right away once you plant the tree. But you can still get an ideal shape and good tree performance if your trees have not been pruned regularly. You can use the same pruning techniques for apple and pear trees.

Whether you begin the pruning process when you plant the tree or not, the goal for apple/pear trees is to create a tree with a central leader (main trunk) and several spirals of side branches, called scaffold branches. Think of the shape of a traditional Christmas tree โ€“ one large trunk with branches all the way around, gradually becoming shorter and less vigorous toward the top. This is what you want.

This shape allows the entire tree to get enough sunlight for fruit production and enough airflow to reduce the chances of disease and pest problems. You will spend the first three to four years establishing the correct tree shape.

โ€œTurmerica Barsโ€
Chocolate & Turmeric Super Bars
Recipe adapted from herbalists Penny & Bevin Clare (Mother & Daughter team)

with love from Rosemary!

16 oz bitter sweet dark chocolate (or milk chocolate)
8 oz Coconut Oil
1 cup finely chopped walnuts
ยฝ - 1 cup Turmeric (thatโ€™s right! โ€˜cupโ€™ not teaspoon or tablespoonโ€ฆ)
1 tsp pure Vanilla Extract
ยฝ - 1 teaspoon course ground black pepper
Course ground Hawaian Black Sea Salt , or Pink Himalyian Salt
Optional: 2-3 tablespoons grated fresh ginger (not dried)

Melt Chocolate & Coconut oil together over low heat. Stir in Vanilla and add herbs (turmeric, black pepper and ginger (optional)). Stir well, making sure there arenโ€™t any lumps.

Stir in ground nuts.

Pour into a shallow baking dish. Place somewhere cool or cold to harden.
Sprinkle the top lightly with course ground Hawaiian Salt or Pink Himalyian salt.

Cut or break into small pieces.

Store in a cool place, not near heat. * The coconut oil will cause this chocolate to melt in โ€˜your handsโ€™, so be sure to store in a cool place.

A WAY TO GROW ENOUGH FOR YOUR FAMILY

It has become more important than ever for You to be able to grow at least part of what You and Your Family eat on a yearly basis. Big factors are the many chemicals and pesticides used on vegetables and fruits in the grocery stores, the rising food prices we are all seeing, and the instability we have seen throughout the world, and in our own Country. We are in a very uncertain time in our Countries history, and we need to be prepared.

Many Families, like yours, are now growing their own Home Gardens--much like our Grandparents and Great Grandparents did with their Victory Gardens years ago. They grew their own Food, Saved their Heirloom Seeds, and were very Self-Sufficient.

The chart below gives you a good idea of how much of each Seed variety or plant you will need to grow per person, based on picking and eating them fresh. If you plan on Canning or freezing your Veggies to get thru the year, you will need to plant more. I would suggest you multiply the amount listed by 3 - 4.

Seeds or plants per 100-ft. row is the recommended amount or number to use for proper spacing and growth. Estimated yield per 100-ft. row is based on optimum growth, so it could be different from Family to Family. If you don't plant in 100-ft rows, then you can divide the amounts down to the size you do plant. So if you have a 5' x 4' raised bed ( 20 sq ft ), you would just divide the 100' results by 5 .

FOR OPTIMUM YIELDS, YOU WILL WANT TO:
1) Start Off with fresh viable Heirloom Seeds
2) Use a good Compost/Soil mixture
3) Maintain Fertility
4) Provide enough water
4) Use Mulch
5) Control Pests ( insects, and the furry types) Companion Plants are a good way to control and deter pests, while staying Organic.

Incredible world of butterfly eggs. These are but a few of the 17,500 different type of butterfly eggs in the world. Butterflies, being oviparous insects, lay eggs either one at a time or in clusters. Butterflies typically lay about 100-300 eggs at a time, but some species can lay more than 1000 eggs.
