I have been warning people off NNS for a while and erythritol is proving to be particularly nasty. Be aware that it is commonly combined with other NNS (like monk fruit) and called 'natural' because it is a sugar alcohol. Just remember that arsenic is also 'natural'and quite lethal.

Found in everything from protein bars to energy drinks, erythritol has long been considered a safe alternative to sugar.

Years ago I was asked to be part of a debate about NNS at our national AACE meeting. I took up the 'Con' position as I was already pretty familiar with the science and didn't think I could stomach the intellectual dishonesty of the 'Pro' position. After a spirited discussion, I was then asked to submit a review for Endocrine Practice summarizing the science in an opinion piece on the 'Con' side of the debate. What followed was interesting and honestly a bit shocking. Reviewers for the article attacked my position and threatened to not allow the paper to be published if I didn't change my final summary opinion. In the end I prevailed by calling out THEIR intellectual dishonesty with their attempted censorship.

We are in the midst of a global health crisis at a time when scientists and our work are repeatedly coming under attack. Our very credibility is threatened. Sadly, the threat is also coming from within our specialties and healthcare institutions.

Science is change. Debate is healthy. Non-nutritive sweeteners are not.

I would like to see this in more restaurants. I'm looking at you restaurants in the short north. I'm especially looking at you who are open for breakfast or late night. I would gladly pay towards a neighborhood account knowing that this may be used for *actual* good rather than the usual "hand-waving" do-nothing-but-show-boating "good."

You never know when you might be in need of a meal. Sometimes, that's all it takes.
