October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month!

Each October, we come together to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month, a time to honor the people with Down syndrome who bring joy, resilience, and strength to our communities.

This month is an opportunity to shine a light on the unique abilities and achievements of people with Down syndrome, while also working to challenge outdated perceptions and eliminate barriers. Whether it’s in schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, or social circles, Down Syndrome Awareness Month invites us all to be advocates for equity and belonging. 💛💙

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) - a time to recognize the contributions of workers with disabilities and to promote inclusive employment practices.

In a recent survey, nearly 71% of the learners in our program reported feeling more prepared to get a job or start new work after participating in our program.

When people are given the right supports, they don’t just gain literacy skills—they gain confidence, independence, and pathways to employment. That’s the power of literacy in action!

Today, Adult Literacy Ohio proudly joined The Columbus Foundation’s Big Table alongside participants from The Ohio State University Nisonger Center, the Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities, and one of our very own adult learners!

Our conversation centered on education as a lifelong pathway, where literacy, opportunity, and inclusion meet. Hearing directly from adult learners reminded us why our work matters: when we invest in accessible education, we invest in confidence, independence, and belonging.

Thank you to everyone who shared their stories and voices today. Every learner deserves to be seen, supported, and celebrated.

At Adult Literacy Ohio, we celebrate all kinds of writing - because every word written is a step toward confidence, communication, and connection.

From crafting fan fiction stories to polishing a resume or perfecting a legible signature, adults in our program have explored writing that reflects their goals, creativity, and everyday lives.

Every writer has a story to tell - and we’re proud to help our learners express their voices in all different kinds of modalities.

From alphabetizing files for the first time to confidence in navigating online calendars and scheduling tools, the outcomes that we see are both practical and profound.

We’re honored to celebrate Alicia Hopkins (Audacity2Speak), one of our adult learners, as she hosts - an art show celebrating the many ways people connect and express themselves.

Alicia’s message is at the heart of what we believe and strive for everyday in our program: everyone deserves access to the tools and support they need to communicate and be understood.

Congratulations, Alicia, on using your art to inspire inclusion and amplify diverse voices!
