Today is Autism Acceptance Day, a time to celebrate and embrace neurodiversity.

At Adult Literacy Ohio, we meet adult learners where they are, building confidence, skills, and independence. We honor the unique strengths of neurodiverse adults and work to ensure everyone has access to learning, community, and opportunity, today and every day.

April is National Poetry Month, and we’re proud to celebrate the voices of our learners at Adult Literacy Ohio.

This powerful poem, “Woman Breaking the Bounds,” was written by Amy, one of our adult learners. Her words reflect strength, growth, and the courage to push beyond limits.

At Adult Literacy Ohio, literacy is more than reading and writing, it’s about finding your voice, building confidence, and sharing your story. Amy’s poem is a beautiful reminder of that.

Join us in celebrating her work and the creativity of adult learners across Ohio.

Today we celebrate the power of inclusion, advocacy, and lifelong learning for World Down Syndrome Day.

At Adult Literacy Ohio, we believe every adult deserves access to education, the opportunity to grow, and the support to reach their goals. We are proud to stand alongside individuals with Down syndrome as they build confidence, strengthen their skills, and share their voices.

Looking for practical, research-based strategies to support inclusive literacy instruction?

The Literacy Access for ALL website (also known as Accessing the General Curriculum) is a FREE, 10-part video series designed to help educators and families ensure every learner has meaningful access to grade-level content.

While the general education curriculum includes planned lessons and instruction, this series also explores something equally important — the informal and unspoken strategies used in classrooms that impact:
- Student growth
- Engagement
- Inclusion
- Meaningful participation

Each video shares actionable strategies grounded in research to help remove barriers and create learning environments where ALL learners can thrive.

If you're supporting students with diverse learning needs, this is a valuable (and free!) resource to explore.

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

What started in 2022 with 9 adult learners has grown to serve over 100 participants across Ohio. We believe literacy is a gateway to independence, workforce skills, and greater community access.

This month, we celebrate our learners and remain committed to empowering Ohioans with developmental disabilities through literacy.

Four years of impact

As our birthday month comes to a close, we’re celebrating all that Adult Literacy Ohio has made possible — including serving 25 adult learners across Ohio right now!

If you’ve been thinking about making a birthday gift, this is the perfect time. Every contribution helps us continue growing and supporting adults with developmental disabilities on their literacy journeys.

We’d also love for our learners, tutors, families, and supporters to leave a message on our Birthday Padlet! We’ll be sharing your notes to thank our donors and highlight the incredible community behind this work. If you’ve been part of our story at any point over the last four years, we would be so grateful for your message, memory, or encouragement.

Thank you for celebrating with us and believing in the power of literacy.
