Over the past 12 days, we’ve shared stories that remind us why adult literacy matters.

We celebrated milestones so meaningful they made the tree.
We lifted learner voices shaping conversations about inclusion.
We shared growth: 45 adult learners served across 5 Ohio counties in this calendar year alone.
We heard about first voicemails, speeches prepared, confidence gained, and skills once thought impossible now within reach.
We highlighted learners giving back as volunteers, entrepreneurs, artists, advocates, and community leaders.

Each story reflects more than reading and writing. It reflects dignity, confidence, belonging, and opportunity.

As we close out our 12 Days of Literacy, we’re deeply grateful to everyone who learns with us, teaches with us, partners with us, and believes in the power of lifelong learning.

If these stories resonated with you and you’re looking for a way to give this season, we invite you to support Adult Literacy Ohio with a donation. Your generosity helps ensure more adults with disabilities can access one-on-one, person-centered literacy support and continue building skills that open doors in everyday life.

Thank you for being part of this community and for believing, with us, that it’s never too late to learn.

12 Days of Literacy – Day 11: Tutor Quote

Today we’re celebrating our tutors, their encouragement, dedication, and belief in every learner’s potential.

“For the learner I am supporting, the most meaningful part of this experience has been the boost in her confidence. She is truly proud of the progress she has made and enjoys working toward her goals. This has given her a sense of purpose and motivation, especially after feeling in the past like others had given up on her academics. The program has helped her see that she is capable of growth and success, and that sense of accomplishment has been very powerful for her.” - Adult Literacy Ohio Tutor

12 Days of Literacy – Day 10: Learners as Leaders

We’re proud to celebrate the creativity, leadership, and entrepreneurship of learners who created or advanced small businesses or initiatives in 2025.

Musical Mosaic by Mark: bringing joy through music as a DJ
Strawberry Crystal Creations: handcrafted DIY jewelry
Joyous Creations Inspired by Sarah: candles made with heart
Audacity2Speak: Uplifting Alicia’s art, published book, and advocacy around disability rights

These ventures reflect talent, determination, and the power of access to learning and support. We can’t wait to see what’s next.

12 Days of Literacy – Day 9: Giving Back

Today, we’re highlighting Carson, who volunteers at a local nursing home. Whether he’s leading spirited games of Uno, joining residents for crafts and other activities, or pitching in with tasks like taking out the garbage or helping move packages, Carson shows up with a willingness to help wherever he’s needed.

His time, kindness, and dedication are truly appreciated by both the residents and the staff and make a real difference in their day-to-day lives.

12 Days of Literacy – Day 8: Community Partner Quote

Today we’re celebrating the powerful growth that happens when confidence, support, and opportunity align.

"The metamorphosis that Amy underwent from the beginning lesson to the end, was nothing short of life changing. As an observer of Amy’s journey through this venture, I and quite a few others who know her, are so happy for her multi-level success. Amy has inspired us to know that we need not be limited by our past, our fears, or our present obstacles. With a good plan and the right, committed relationships, and our own willingness to trust and try, we can raise the value of our skills, our experiences, and our life, and the lives of those around us. This makes for a hopeful, better world." - Eric Metzger, Community Partner

12 Days of Literacy- Day 7: Account Manager Quote

Today we’re celebrating meaningful milestones, big and small, that build confidence, independence, and joy in learning.

"Morgan is taking the time to sound out larger, unfamiliar or difficult words. She enjoyed the reading material and the help she received preparing for a speech she had to give. She also had the confidence to leave her first ever voicemail message! It was of significant length, stayed on topic and flowed well. This was a VERY big deal!" - Parent of an Adult Literacy Ohio Learner

12 Days of Literacy – Day 4: Our Supporters

We are incredibly grateful to our partners at Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities and Hamilton County Developmental Disabilities in standing with us to offer literacy supports for our adults that are responsive, respectful, and aligned with their person-centered goals.

This work would also not be possible without the generous support of our funders:
The Columbus Foundation, AEP Ohio, Harry C. Moores Foundation, Columbia Gas of Ohio / NiSource Foundation, IGS Energy, Walmart Spark Good, Bath & Body Works, Shumaker Law Firm, Jason’s Connection, and the support of generous individual donors.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to expanding access, strengthening partnerships, and continuing to support adult learners as they build the skills and confidence to participate more fully in their communities and workplaces.

12 Days of Literacy – Day 2: Big Table Conversation

We hosted a Big Table conversation through The Columbus Foundation, bringing community members together to discuss meaningful inclusion in schools, workplaces, and communities. One of our learners participated and shared her lived experience around the topic.

We are so excited to build on this momentum with a Learner Advisory Committee in the New Year, ensuring that adult voices continue to shape and strengthen the program in the year ahead.

12 Days of Literacy – Day 1: Justice’s Ornament

It’s the best time of the year, our 12 Days of Literacy! Today, we are kicking things off with Justice!

Each year, Justice’s parents gives an ornament to every family member representing a meaningful milestone from that year. For example, a car ornament to celebrate earning a driver’s license.

Participating in our adult literacy program was such a significant part of Justice’s year that we MADE THE TREE.

Although Justice graduated a few years ago, we are still incredibly honored by this recognition, and we’re hopeful the skills he gained continue to support him today.

To all our learners, tutors, and community partners, we wish you a very Merry Christmas!
