Adult Literacy Ohio has helped me realize that using larger print helps me read faster and understand what I read better. I also learned that it’s okay to reread things." - Reinah, Adult Learner

Every learner’s journey is unique, and finding what works for you makes all the difference!

November is Family Literacy Month! This is a great time to remember that learning doesn’t stop at any age and that literacy opens doors not only for individual adults but for whole families.

One of our adult learners, Alex, shared this moment with us:
“I’m getting better at reading. Last night, I was able to read a book to my family with very little help.” - Alex, Adult Learner

Moments like these are why we do this work. When an adult gains literacy skills, they also gain confidence, independence, and the ability to participate more fully in family life, work, and community.

Here’s to the families who cheer on every small step, and to the adult learners who show us every day that it is never too late to grow. And thank you to everyone who helps create these moments through your support, partnership, and advocacy!

"For the learner I am supporting, the most meaningful part of this experience has been the boost in her confidence. She is truly proud of the progress she has made and enjoys working toward her goals. This has given her a sense of purpose and motivation, especially after feeling in the past like others had given up on her academics. The program has helped her see that she is capable of growth and success, and that sense of accomplishment has been very powerful for her." - Adult Literacy Ohio Account Manager

ElevateDD recently testified on House Bill 455, emphasizing why strong transition services matter for students on IEPs. At Adult Literacy Ohio, we see the long-term impact every day. Many adults graduate with diplomas but without the reading, writing, and communication skills needed for work or independent living. With more time and the right supports, our learners show just how much they can achieve.

The data makes this clear:
- Fewer than one in four working-age people with disabilities were employed in 2024.

- In a statewide survey, 94% of adults with developmental disabilities said they want to improve their reading skills to work, manage daily tasks, communicate, and advocate for themselves.

- Among our participants, 95% report increased independence, 94% greater confidence, and 71% feel better prepared for work.

We see these gains every day as learners build skills for employment, daily life, and self-advocacy. We’re proud to support Adult Literacy Ohio participants and to advocate for policies that give every student the strong foundation they deserve.

"I am better at reading the chore lists that are posted in my house and using my voice-to-text app to text my friends and family. I am also better at sounding out words and figuring out what they might be. Amy (my tutor) brightens up my day and makes me feel like I am an important part of her day. I am thankful and blessed to have her. She is trustworthy and she changes the way I look at things. " - Kristy, Adult Learner

Everyone learns differently, and that’s the beauty of it! At Adult Literacy Ohio, we celebrate diverse learning styles and support each learner in discovering what works best for them through self-directed, person-centered instruction.

Alicia’s (Audacity2Speak) story is a powerful reminder of how creativity and self-direction can open new pathways to understanding. We’re so proud to have Alicia in our program and inspired by her ongoing advocacy for inclusion and accessibility in learning!

"Being part of this program led to other opportunities for me. People said they can tell that this program has made changes for me. It has put me pretty far from where I came from. It gave me the tools I needed in my life. It really helped me learn and showed me I am capable of anything."- Amy, Adult Learner
