Creating connections

People with mental and substance use disorders will often avoid getting treatment due to the stigma they experience for having these types of diseases. Connecting people to helping resources without judgement is important in becoming a stigma free community.

Stop the stigma and help connect people to resources.

Reach out to mental health and addiction treatment resources such as Stride at 877-463-6512, asapbc.org or mhmbc.org.

Stigma isolates, understanding connects.

Did you know? Nearly 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experience mental illness each year and 10% of Americans age 12 and over report battling a substance use disorder. Breaking the stigma starts with compassion and education.

Start the Conversation

We often focus on healing the body and less so on healing the mind. It is uncomfortable sometimes to extend the reach and start the conversation with mental health and addiction as the topic. Sometimes, the best support is simply being there and listening without judgment.

Replace judgment with empathy.

Avoid using terms like "crazy" or "weak,” and labels such as “junkie” or “addict.”

Instead, remember mental illness and substance use disorders are medically diagnosable disases. Be encouraging and listen. Small changes in language make a big impact in reducing stigma.

Wellness Tip #7: Focus on Your Spiritual Wellness

Life gets busy—but taking just 10 minutes a day to pause, reflect, or pray can help quiet your mind and reconnect with what matters most. Small moments of reflection can create space for peace, clarity, and stronger overall wellness.

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Let's stop the stigma together.

Stigma prevents individuals from seeking the help they need, especially when it comes to mental health and substance use disorders. Together, we can build a community where mental health conversations are open and stigma-free. Learn more at (https://stopstigmatogether.org).

See the Person, Listen. Support.

Untreated mental conditions and substance misuse can transform people. The pain and anguish felt by those with these disorders are real. You don’t need to be an expert but you do need to “see the person” and not the disease. Just showing up can make a huge difference.
