Every patient deserves a trusted physician to be on their side, explaining health conditions, answering questions, and ensuring patients truly understand their care. Physicians bring expertise, empathy, and years of training to the patient-physician relationship – and Medicaid protects a physician’s ability to provide care and ensures access to care for patients who need it most.

When we strengthen Medicaid, we strengthen the patient-physician relationship.

More than 1 in 4 physicians reported prior authorization has led to a serious adverse event for a patient in their care. Dr. Bruce A. Scott underscores the importance of keeping treatment decisions between a patient and a physician in a recent testimonial.

“The patients and the physicians work together to develop a plan, and they know what is best for them. The insurance company should not be inserting themselves into that relationship.”

OSMA is excited to report another victory in our efforts to bring meaningful insurance reform to Ohio.

Today, Substitute Senate Bill 162 passed the Ohio Senate 33–0, reducing administrative burden on physicians through changes to the insurance payment recoupment process.

This legislation would:
• Shorten the insurer takeback window from 24 months to 12 months, improving predictability and financial stability for practices
• Extend the provider appeal period from 30 to 60 days, giving physicians a fair chance to respond to the complexities of takeback determinations
• Require electronic notification of takebacks when available, streamlining communication and reducing unnecessary administrative work

OSMA has supported SB 162 for over a year as part of a broader push for insurance reform. Today’s vote is an important step as the bill moves to the Ohio House.

Why this matters: Less time spent navigating payer processes means more time focused on patient care.

Honoring leadership in action at this year’s OSMA Annual Meeting.

Dr. Elizabeth Muennich was recognized as Physician Advocate of the Year for her sustained commitment to advancing physician priorities, including direct advocacy at the Statehouse and ongoing engagement with policymakers to move key issues forward.

Dr. Lisa Bohman Egbert received the OSMAPAC Donor of the Year award, recognized for more than a decade of consistent support and investment in advocacy efforts that strengthen medicine in Ohio.

Both exemplify what it means to go beyond clinical care, showing up for the profession, for patients, and for the future of healthcare in Ohio.

At this year’s Annual Meeting, Dr. Gary Katz was sworn in as President of the Ohio State Medical Association.

An emergency physician, Dr. Katz founded a practice focused on expanding access to care in Ohio’s rural and critical access communities, now serving tens of thousands of patients each year. His leadership across OSMA and the AMA has focused on access to care, physician advocacy, and protecting the physician-patient relationship. That experience now carries into his role as OSMA President and the work ahead.

We also recognize Dr. John Bastulli for his leadership over the past year, as he joins the line of Past Presidents who continue to shape the organization.
