85% of patients agree that the bond that physicians form with their patients is central to health care. Physicians dedicate themselves to years of training and education so they may provide high-quality care to their patients, and in leading a health care team, physicians can help their patients make informed decisions about their health. Psychiatric physicians, residents, and medical students came together at the Statehouse for the Ohio Psychiatric Physicians Association’s annual Advocacy Day, supported by OSMA.

Throughout the day, participants met with members of the Ohio House and Senate to advocate for the needs of psychiatric physicians.

A key focus was House Bill 219, which addresses network adequacy and efforts to help physicians get onto insurers’ networks.

Right now, legislative and regulatory decisions are being made that will directly affect medical practice and patient care across Ohio.

Those policies are being shaped at the Statehouse, where physician voice is essential.
OSMA brings what physicians are seeing in practice into those conversations.

That work is stronger when physicians speak up:
• Testifying at the Statehouse
• Sharing how insurance and regulatory requirements are affecting care
• Helping guide advocacy priorities through physician-led committees

Our team will help you prepare and support you through the process.

AI is already being used by insurance companies to make decisions about prior authorization and claims, raising serious concerns about transparency and patient access to care.

OSMA CEO Todd Baker joined WOSU Public Media’s All Sides to share the physician perspective on how these tools can affect clinical decision-making, payment for services, and the ability of patients to receive efficient, effective care.

Physicians are calling for transparency, accountability, and appropriate oversight to ensure AI supports patient care rather than creating new barriers.

Physicians are called to medicine to be their patients’ strongest ally, providing the expertise and information patients need to make informed decisions.

Their years of education and training make physicians well-equipped to provide high-quality health care decisions, yet prior authorization undermines physicians’ treatment decisions.

OSMA’s physicians want to reform the health care system to keep treatment decisions between a patient and their doctor.

OSMA Advocacy leadership and members of Ohio’s AMA Delegation met with legislators in Washington, D.C. during the American Medical Association National Advocacy Conference.

Participating physician leaders included Dr. Lisa Bohman Egbert, Dr. Albert Hsu, Dr. Richard Ellison (AMA Delegation), and Mary Beth Ellison, President of the AMA Foundation Board of Directors.

These conversations help ensure Ohio physicians remain represented in national healthcare discussions.

SB 36 is scheduled for a hearing today in the Ohio Senate Health Committee.

The bill would allow Ohio optometrists to perform certain surgical procedures. OSMA and the Ohio Ophthalmological Society have raised concerns regarding surgical training, patient safety, and appropriate oversight.

Competence in surgery requires the breadth, rigor, and clinical judgment developed over 8 years of medical school and residency training. A limited procedural course cannot replicate the depth of supervised surgical education and clinical decision-making developed through that training.

OSMA supports physician-led, team-based care that protects patient safety.

1 in 10 people live with a rare disease. On we uplift the patients who are on a rare medical journey and celebrate the physicians who are there every step of the way, empowering their patients with the knowledge and guidance they need to make the health care decisions that are right for them.
