When Shelby Rice walked across the stage to graduate from Mount Carmel College of Nursing earlier this year, she wasn’t just starting her career—she was continuing a family tradition. Shelby, a graduate of Columbus St. Francis DeSales High School, followed in the footsteps of her grandmother, Maggie Thiel Berger, who graduated from MCCN in 1960.
Separated by 65 years, both women share a deep commitment to caring for others, rooted in their Catholic faith and Mount Carmel’s mission to treat mind, body, and soul. Today, Shelby is beginning her nursing journey at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital—the same hospital where Maggie once served in the operating room.
From pinning ceremonies to shared values, this story is a beautiful reminder that nursing is more than a profession—it’s a calling that spans generations.
