A cesarean birth involves moving through several layers of your body to meet your baby.
From the outside in, hereās what that looks like:
1ļøā£ Skin ā the outer layer of your body, where the incision is typically made low and horizontal
2ļøā£ A layer of fatty tissue ā just beneath the skin, helping cushion and protect everything underneath
3ļøā£ A strong layer of connective tissue (fascia) ā kind of like a supportive wrap that holds your abdominal muscles in place
4ļøā£ Your abdominal muscles ā these are usually gently separated and moved aside, not cut
5ļøā£ A thin lining inside your abdomen (peritoneum) ā this layer is opened to reach the uterus
6ļøā£ The uterus ā where your baby has been growing, carefully opened (usually low and horizontal)
7ļøā£ The amniotic sac ā the fluid-filled ābubbleā your baby lives in, which is opened so your baby can be born
A cesarean is a powerful, valid way to give birth.
Andāitās also major abdominal surgery.
Understanding whatās happening in your body matters.
Not to scare you, but to help you walk into birth informed, prepared, and supportedāwhatever direction it takes.
