Q: What is a typical day like for you?
As the third year on the Head and Neck Surgery rotation at the James Cancer Hospital my typical week consists of four days of OR cases covering usually one free flap and multiple large open case such as parotid dissections, thyroids, and neck dissections and one day of clinic seeing a mix of head and neck cancer and skull base pathology. Additionally, the third year role includes being a primary contact to help guide first and second year residents as well as being a float to assist with more senior roles in our dynamic and busy team.

Q: What is your proudest accomplishment?
I'm most proud of being able to call The Ohio State University Otolaryngology Department my home and for the privilege of working with our sagacious attendings, excellent ancillary staff, and fellow residents who inspire me to be my best self every day.

Q: Tell us about a recent favorite moment at work.
A recent favorite memory of mine was scrubbing in on our newest Head and Neck faculty Dr. Catherine Haring's first major ablative and free flap reconstruction case as an attending at OSU. She guided me through bilateral neck dissections and we reflected the oral cavity cancer through the floor of mouth to optimize our ability to obtain clear posterior margins. As a resident at OSU, we encounter advanced cancer pathology that challenges standard approaches towards routine cases.

🎾 The annual “Head and Neck Pelotonia Tennis Open” happened this Sunday! 🎾

We are proud of this annual tradition of the “lowest-pressure” fundraiser “tournament” open to all players, non-players and expert players - all to fundraise for , an organization funding innovative cancer research .

The one-day tournament kicked off with breakfast followed by singles and doubles matches on the OSU tennis courts. Tournament t-shirts designed by ENT faculty were sold for additional donations.

Over $6000 was raised and everyone had a great time - Vivek Ramaswamy was named tournament champion, cheered on by Dr. Ramaswamy and their son!

Q: What is a typical day like for you?
A: “As the third year on the Pediatric rotation at Nationwide Children’s Hospital , my role as the consult resident is to keep daily team operations running smoothly. My responsibilities include seeing new consults, operating on any scheduled or add-on cases with the day call attending, and coordinating with other teams. It is a fun but busy rotation where you really grow in your abilities to manage complex pediatric patients.”

Q: What is your proudest accomplishment?
A: “I am most proud to have matched at The Ohio State University for residency. I am privileged to have the opportunity to work alongside world class surgeons and leaders in our field on a daily basis.”

Q: Tell us about a recent favorite memory at work.
A: “I always enjoy getting to operate with other co-residents. I recently had the opportunity to work with one of my co-residents in a complicated sinusitis case. With our attending’s guidance we finished the case and the patient had an excellent recovery.”

Introducing Dan Hall, MD

Dr. Hall is one of our PGY-3 Residents. He joined us after completing his undergrad degree at Brigham Young University and medical school at the University of Utah.

Q: What is a typical day like for you?
A: I am currently the PGY-3 Neurotology resident. My days consist of clinics and ORs helping to manage chronic ear disease, hearing loss, and lateral skull base tumors. I also lead ENT didactics for third year medical students rotating through our department.

Q: What is your proudest accomplishment?
A: Some of my proudest accomplishments have been opportunities I've had to do humanitarian work in developing nations. Understanding challenges and barriers to accessing quality medical care in other countries makes me appreciate the incredible work that is being done within the Department of Otolaryngology at The Ohio State to save and change lives.

Q: Tell us about a recent favorite memory at work?
A: I recently was helping to take care of a medically complex patient at Nationwide Children's Hopsital who required ventilatory support. The family of the patient was confused and concerned with quickly changing circumstances, especially due to a language barrier and inability to have a translator present due to the time of day. I was able to speak to them in their native language of Spanish to explain the circumstances and next steps, which helped to alleviate their concerns.

OSU ENT residents visited the temporal bone lab last night to drill as part of their Neurotology didactics series 🧠👂🏼

Senior residents paired up with junior residents to learn temporal bone anatomy and to practice drilling techniques. The temporal bone lab is equipped with high-quality microscopes at each station, multiple viewing screens, and state-of-the-art Medtronic systems designed to mirror the residents’ operative experience.
