Lemon Balm — A Plant for Calm, Kitchen & Craft

Our Herb of the Week continues with lemon balm — a bright, citrus-scented member of the mint family long treasured for both comfort and clarity.

Here are just a few ways this gentle herb has been used across disciplines:

✨ Culinary
• Fresh leaves infused into water, teas, syrups, and summer cordials
• Chopped into fruit salads or herb butters for a subtle citrus lift
• Steeped into honey for calming evening blends

🌿 Medicinal (Traditional Use)
• Prepared as a calming nervine to support emotional balance
• Traditionally used to encourage digestive comfort
• Applied topically in herbal oils and salves for soothing skin support

🕯 Traditional & Ceremonial
• Associated historically with uplifting the spirit and “gladdening the heart”
• Used in monasteries and early European apothecaries for mood support
• Included in calming evening rituals and rest practices

🏡 Home & Craft
• Dried and added to sachets for drawers and linens
• Infused into botanical cleaning vinegars
• Distilled into hydrosols for aromatic room or linen sprays

From kitchen to apothecary to home ritual, lemon balm brings a sense of gentle steadiness wherever it’s used.

Which space would you use it in most — kitchen, apothecary, or home?

We are back at it! The Chicken Palace Project is moving forward since we had some lovely weather this weekend. The last two winter storms did some serious damage to the existing coop, we've stabilized it and the girls are fine, but we needed to kick start the completion of the new compound...we did a fair amount of work this weekend! Next weekend we should be able to enclose it completely! Unfortunately, the garden kitties will no longer be able to use it, but we have a summer project to build them a new shelter!

Elderflower & Elderberry — A Plant of Many Traditions

Our Herb of the Week reminds us that elder is more than a seasonal staple — it’s a plant woven through kitchen, apothecary, and craft.

Here are a few ways elder has been traditionally used:

✨ Elderflowers
• Infused into syrups, cordials, and honeys for bright floral beverages
• Steeped as a gentle tea traditionally used during seasonal transitions
• Added to facial steams for aromatic botanical skin rituals

🍇 Elderberries
• Simmered into traditional syrups for immune resilience
• Prepared into jams, shrubs, and oxymels (berries must always be properly cooked)
• Crafted into glycerites and tinctures for the apothecary shelf

🧵 Fabric & Craft
• Elderberries produce beautiful muted purple-to-grey natural dyes (with mordant variation)
• Historically used for inks and staining applications
• Hollow elder stems were traditionally fashioned into simple whistles and flutes

From nourishment to resilience to creative expression, elder is truly a whole-plant gift.

Which use surprises you most?

Herb of the Week: Elderberry

There’s a reason elderberry has remained a seasonal staple for generations.

In this short video, we share why this deeply pigmented berry continues to be one of the most trusted botanicals for immune resilience — especially during times of environmental and seasonal stress.
