Our department had the honor to partner with The Ohio State University School of Music to share education and awareness about noise-induced hearing loss. Jodi Baxter,AuD gave an amazing speech at yesterday’s Chorale and University Chorus concert. She was joined by 3rd year AuD student Aryn Robinson (not pictured); and second year AuD students, Emma Canino and Audrey Corder, who hosted an information table at the event.

Thank you for having us and for helping spread awareness about hearing health! 🦻🏼❤️

Untreated hearing difficulties don’t just affect your ears. Research shows they can:
-Increase stress and listening fatigue
-Reduce memory and concentration
-Lead to social withdrawal and anxiety
-Affect long-term brain health 🧠

The good news? Addressing hearing problems early, through hearing aids, communication strategies, or hearing conservation, helps keep your brain and social life strong.
Hearing well = living well.

Many young adults report difficulty hearing in noisy settings (restaurants, group chats, lectures) even when their hearing test results appear normal. This is sometimes called hidden hearing loss.
-It’s linked to subtle damage in the auditory system that standard tests don’t always detect. Audiologists can use advanced tests and recommend strategies, technology, or training to help.
-Don’t ignore the signs, sometimes your brain and ears may need extra support.

-Mindfulness Coping Strategies

Hearing health is directly tied to quality of life. Even mild hearing difficulties can lead to:
-Miscommunication at work or school
-Strain in friendships or relationships
-Increased stress and fatigue
-Social withdrawal and isolation
-The earlier hearing loss is addressed, the easier it is to adapt and thrive. Audiologists provide strategies and technology to keep you fully engaged in life.

Balance problems aren’t just for older adults. Inner ear disorders (vestibular issues) can affect young and middle-aged adults, often causing:
-Dizziness or spinning (vertigo)
-Motion sickness or disorientation
-Trouble concentrating after dizzy spells
-Audiologists perform specialized vestibular testing to find out if your balance problems are ear-related and guide you toward effective treatment.
-Balance matters in everyday life, whether it’s athletics, work, or just feeling steady on your feet.

Noise exposure is one of the biggest risks for young adults. Loud concerts, clubs, sports arenas, and even earbuds at high volume can exceed safe levels. Prolonged exposure above 85 dB damages hearing cells permanently.
-How to protect yourself without missing the fun:
🎧 Use musician’s earplugs or noise-filtering plugs.
📱 Follow the 60/60 rule (no more than 60% volume for 60 minutes).
⏱️ Take “quiet breaks” between loud exposures.
-Hearing damage is invisible, but prevention is powerful!

Audiology isn’t just about “old age” or “hearing loss.” For young and middle-aged adults, audiologists:
-Diagnose and manage hearing difficulties from noise, genetics, or medical conditions.
-Provide tools for tinnitus (ringing/buzzing in the ears).
-Evaluate dizziness and balance problems.
-Fit and program hearing technology like hearing aids and custom earplugs.
-Audiology supports communication, productivity, and social connection, things that matter every day!
