What is your vibe? Who will you allow to be in your space while you labor and bring your child into the world? No two births are alike (nor should they be), and your birth is your own. Make the most of it. Surround yourself with people who bring the same energy. Everyone else can wait. This is your time.

I tell my clients all the time... don't wish for a fast birth. I get that people want it over with quickly, but also... the feeling of being run over by a Mack truck is a real thing. After three relatively fast births (the last one was ummm.... 15 minutes after arrival?), this mama finally got one that she could savor and appreciate. I know that sounds weird. "Enjoy labor?" But seriously, there can be an energy that takes the birth to a whole other level when you have the right team. After her water broke on its own (ON her due date!!), she was admitted at 5cm around 3:15PM. We walked the halls and visited with friends. Mom and dad had time to facetime with the older siblings to keep them included in the process. Mom and her provider had time to discuss what was going on with the contractions. It was nice and dark in the room after the sun went down. And when it was time, she quickly delivered their 9lb 4oz son at 10:38PM. It was a blessing to be a part of all four of their pregnancies and a privilege to be able to photograph all four babies. I bought the Wonder Woman book for their five year old... five years ago. But really... mom earned it. She is their very first superhero. Welcome baby. You're in good hands.

Another Labor Day. Another day to reflect on why I love what I have been called to do.
Last year on Labor Day we were at a race with @TeamJimOwen and I left a little early to meet with a new client for coffee. While she and I were discussing her upcoming birth, I got the call that every doula dreads... “Come now. They want to do a c-section.”
I excused myself and headed to the hospital, praying that they wouldn’t make a decision before I got there. I got in the room to find mom and dad talking to a LOVELY resident who was calm and reassuring, and who was confident that there was no reason to rush into anything. When he left, dad stepped out to make calls to update the family. Mom and I had a moment to chat about what her options were and what she felt like she wanted to do.
Then the resident came back in the room. “The doctor says we need to prep you for a c-section now because he doesn’t want to wait around all day to do what he’s going to have to do later, anyway.”
Mom was prepared. She told the resident that she would like to wait to discuss it with the perinatologist and her husband before they made any decisions. (Keep in mind...this mom is not in labor...but there is barbecue waiting.) They discussed her options and the perinatologist agreed that a cesarean was not in her or the baby’s best interest. They decided on a slow induction with careful monitoring...which resulted in a healthy mom and baby delivered a few hours later.
The whole point of this is... I love what I do. I feel like it IS my calling. Do I miss family stuff? Yep. Do I have to make sure there is gas in my car at all times? Yep. Do I miss trips out of town with my friends? Yep.
But there are THESE mamas who call at 35 weeks and say “Come now.”
And so I do. Happy Labor Day to all you moms and potential moms out there. And Happy “almost” Birthday to Levi.
