🥄 When can my baby start solid foods? 🍼

This is a question we get all the time! The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends introducing solid foods around 4–6 months of age, when your baby shows signs of developmental readiness.

✨ Signs your baby may be ready for solids include:
• Good head and neck control
• Ability to move food from the front of the mouth to the back with their tongue
• Interest in food — watching you eat, opening their mouth, or bringing hands to their mouth

👅 If you offer a small amount of puréed food and your baby pushes it right back out with their tongue, that’s okay! It often means they’re not quite ready yet.

👶 If your baby is at least 4 months old and showing some of these signs, talk with your pediatrician about starting solids.
⏳ Remember: premature babies may take a little longer to be ready, and that’s completely normal.

As always, we’re happy to help guide you through this exciting milestone — just ask at your next visit! 💙

🌡️ Let’s Talk About Fever 🌡️

With many illnesses circulating right now, we wanted to review what a fever is.

A fever is defined as a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher. Fever is not an illness itself—it’s a sign that the body’s immune system is working to fight an infection.

👶 How to check a temperature in newborns:
A re**al temperature is the most accurate and preferred method for newborns and young infants.

🚨 Important reminder for young infants:
Any infant younger than 3 months with a fever should be evaluated promptly to make sure there is no serious bacterial infection that requires treatment.

If you’re ever unsure about your child’s temperature or symptoms, please don’t hesitate to call our office.

🍼 Breast Milk Storage Tips for Families 🍼

Proper storage of expressed breast milk helps keep it safe and nutritious for your baby. Here are some CDC-recommended guidelines:

✔️ Store breast milk in special breast milk freezer bags or bottles designed for refrigerator or freezer storage
✔️ To thaw frozen breast milk, hold the bag or bottle under warm running water or use a bottle warmer
❌ Do not microwave breast milk
✔️ Once breast milk is thawed, do not refreeze it

We’re sharing this helpful visual from the CDC to support breastfeeding families. If you have questions about feeding, storage, or your baby’s nutrition, our team is always happy to help 💙

🌬️ Tis the season for lots of viruses! 🌬️

If your baby or infant is congested, here are a few things you can do at home to help them feel more comfortable:

✔️ Run a cool-mist humidifier in the room during sleep to keep the inside of the nose moist.
✔️ Remove visible mucus by placing a drop of nasal saline (or breast milk) in each nostril, then gently suction with a bulb syringe.

🚨 When to be seen:
If congestion is interfering with your baby’s ability to eat or sleep, if your baby develops a fever, or if you notice labored or fast breathing, those are important reasons for your child to be evaluated.

Sharing the latest CDC map for flu activity. As you can see, Georgia is currently experiencing high flu activity. We are seeing a significant number of Influenza A cases in the office.

Certain children are at higher risk for complications from the flu, including children under the age of 2 and those with underlying conditions such as asthma. Complications can include ear infections and pneumonia.
