Just a little heads up as we head into winter here in the northern hemisphere.

Sugar is hidden in a lot of places. And it’s absolutely corrosive to our health.

Buyer beware (and yes, I get how much it s*cks when you learn it’s loaded into spaghetti sauce too!)

Stay healthy and strong for those you love! 💪🏼🩵💫

The association here isn't surprising, unfortunately. And this study only looked at chemicals in hair straighteners AND only one outcome, uterine cancer. There are so many other potentially hormone disrupting chemicals that women are exposed to on a daily basis, and so many other potential consequences. Learn how to reduce your exposure to these and other hormone disrupting chemicals and support your natural detoxification processes with a healthy diet and lifestyle. This came across my computer this morning and it is absolutely no surprise to me (or likely to any of my colleagues caring for pregnant patients)! This data doesn't even include those with other chronic health issues like autoimmune disease and other co-morbidities. The scope of this problem is enormous! The field of obstetrics used to be a joyous experience caring for healthy women and seeing the infrequent high risk patient. No longer. The vast majority of patients have at least one, if not more, high risk factors. Complications are commonplace, yet, it is our expectation that "everything will be fine". Unless our society starts placing more emphasis on preparing our bodies for a healthy pregnancy, this trend is only going to get worse. We assume that when we are young we are healthy. This data clearly shows this is NOT the case.

Geography serves as a marker for wider socioeconomic and racial discrepancies, which policies and public health efforts may curb.

I am amazed at how rarely the Omega-3 Index is checked or discussed in primary care offices. A simple test can tell you valuable information about your heart health. In my patients, I check this biomarker regularly. Make sure you ask your P*P to check it too!

Evidence points towards the greater benefit of achieving a healthy omega-3 index score in individuals who are already at high risk for a cardiovascular event.

Contrary to what many still believe, it isn’t only about fried foods and red meat.

Contrary to what many still believe, it isn’t only about fried foods and red meat.

The biggest culprit of all is high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) found in soda, juices, and in most processed foods.

When you ingest fructose in high amounts without the associated fiber found in whole fruit, it turns on the cholesterol-producing factory in your liver called lipogenesis which makes super dangerous small LDL particles, jacks up your triglycerides, and lowers the HDL (or good) cholesterol. So does sugar in any form, including flour and refined carbs.⁣

Breaking these addictions and rewiring your brain is easier than you might think. It doesn’t take weeks or months. These strategies can help:

Eat real food. You need to eat fat and protein for each of your meals. Whole foods carbohydrates like veggies, legumes, nuts and seeds are perfectly healthy. Broccoli is broccoli. Processed, sugary junk foods are not real foods. They set the stage for sugar addiction and all its ugly consequences.

Steady blood sugar levels. Eat a nutritious breakfast with some protein like eggs, protein shakes, or nut butters. Studies repeatedly show that eating a healthy high-protein breakfast helps people maintain weight loss.

Reduce stress. Stress eating and junk food go together. When you’re feeling stressed, you’re more likely to reach for that bag of chocolate chip cookies or whatever your vice might be. Learn to address the root cause of your stress and address it with something like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing.

Exercise smartly. The next time you get a hankering for something sweet, walk it off… Literally! Besides creating a healthy distraction to avoid nose diving into a pint of butter pecan ice cream, exercise tapers cravings and raises feel-good endorphin levels.

Sleep well. Ever notice you’re hungrier for something sugary after a terrible night’s sleep? Studies show lack of sleep increases cravings. To get eight hours of good quality sleep every night.

This is something I have known for years. We don't talk enough about the importance of preparing ourselves for a healthy pregnancy. We will not be able to address the rising morbidity and mortality rates of pregnant women in this country without making sure everyone not only has access to healthy food (free from pesticides and additives), but understands the importance of consuming it before and during pregnancy. Just like smoking, we all know it is bad for a woman and her fetus during pregnancy. So too is consuming nutrient depleted, poor quality, cheap food. Taking a prenatal vitamin (also often cheap and poor quality) is not enough to undo years of poor nutrition to make everything magically well. We need to first address our overall health with diet and lifestyle changes (ensuring quality sleep, movement and stress management) THEN entertain pregnancy. But, if pregnancy unexpectedly, then we must at least stress the importance of a healthy, nutrient dense diet.
