Your medications shouldn’t feel like a mystery.

Know the name. Know what it treats. Know how to take it. Know how long. Know the side effects.

Because when you understand your treatment, you take control of your health.

Your heart works hard for you, let’s take care of it. Small, everyday choices can make a big difference in protecting your heart health, including eating balanced meals, staying active, avoiding smoking, and limiting sugary drinks and alcohol.

At Charitable Pharmacy, we believe prevention, education, and access to care all play a role in helping our community live healthier, fuller lives. This month, we encourage you to take one step....no matter how small, toward better heart health.

As we close out our Black History Month spotlights, we honor five extraordinary pioneers whose courage, brilliance, and commitment reshaped the field of pharmacy.

From being the first to earn medical and pharmacy degrees, to owning drugstores, educating generations of pharmacists, leading national organizations, and expanding access to care—these trailblazers broke barriers that once seemed unmovable.

Their stories remind us that pharmacy is more than medicine. It’s education. It’s advocacy. It’s leadership. And it’s community.

At Charitable Pharmacy, we are grateful for the legacy they built—one that continues to influence how we serve, care, and show up for our neighbors every day.

Happy Black History Month. We honor the past, celebrate the present, and remain committed to a more equitable future in healthcare. ✨

Black History Month Spotlight 🖤

In 1979, Mary Munson Runge made history as the first woman and first African American president of the American Pharmacists Association, ending 126 years of white, male leadership.

Born in Louisiana to the town’s first Black pharmacist, she followed his path—earning her degree from Xavier University of Louisiana and dedicating her career to hospital and community pharmacy, serving patients with limited access to care.

Her leadership changed the profession from the inside out.

Black History Month Spotlight 🖤

The daughter of a formerly enslaved father, Anna Louise James broke barriers in pharmacy history. She became the first Black woman to graduate from the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy and one of the first licensed Black female pharmacists in the United States.

Drawn to science early on, she pursued her goal relentlessly—graduating in 1908 and opening doors for generations to come.

Her courage helped redefine who belongs in healthcare.

Black History Month Spotlight 🖤

Julia Pearl Hughes became the first Black woman to own and operate a drugstore. After graduating from the Pharmaceutical College (now Howard University College of Pharmacy) in 1897, she completed postgraduate study at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy.

She worked at Frederick Douglass Hospital before opening her own pharmacies in Philadelphia and later Newport News, Virginia. Alongside pharmacy, she built a successful hair-care business and became a political activist.

Her life reflects innovation, entrepreneurship, and advocacy—all in service of community.

Black History Month Spotlight 🖤

Eugene Hickman Sr. was a cornerstone of African American pharmacy education in the United States. While teaching at Texas Southern University from 1959–1998, he helped educate nearly one-third of the nation’s Black pharmacists, inspiring generations as a mentor and educator.

A trailblazer himself, he completed pharmacy school in three years, earned a master’s degree, and became the first African American to receive a PhD in pharmacy from the University of Iowa.

His impact lives on through the countless professionals he helped shape.

Black History Month Spotlight 🖤

Born into slavery decades before the Civil War, James McCune Smith refused to be limited by his circumstances. Barred from U.S. colleges because of his race, he studied abroad at the University of Glasgow, earning three degrees, including a medical doctorate.

He later returned to New York City, becoming the first African American to earn a medical degree and the first to own and operate a pharmacy, serving patients of all races.

His legacy reminds us that access to education and care can change history.
