Join Region 6 (Cincinnati Area) for an evening of reflection, creativity, and collective care at Mind/Body/Art at the Cincinnati Art Museum. As part of Social Work Month, this unique experience brings social workers together to explore the connections between mental health, wellness, and art through guided gallery conversation, mindfulness, and a restorative practice inspired by the artwork. You’ll also hear from a Self-Advocate with Project CARE at YWCA Greater Cincinnati and a mindfulness expert from The Well. This program was a favorite last year, and we’re excited to gather again on Thursday, March 5 from 6:00–7:00 pm at the Cincinnati Art Museum. Learn more at naswoh.org/region6

NASW Ohio members are exploring the formation of a statewide workgroup focused on climate change and climate crises as they intersect with social work practice, health, equity, and systems of care across Ohio. Environmental changes paired with rapid development are furthering existing social and environmental inequities that many of us, and those we serve, face in our day-to-day lives. The overall goal of this statewide workgroup would be to enhance awareness around state environmental legislation as it may impact population groups, provide educational resources for personal and agency use, and strengthen individual and collective actions, ideas, and methods for supporting more climate-resilient communities. While this is the vision, we also look forward to taking a collaborative approach in meeting the needs of members. We invite you to take our brief survey and let us know your level of interest, what concerns you have at the intersection of social and environmental justice, or request further information.

AI is already shaping social work and the lives of the clients we serve. The impact is all around us: documentation systems, client help-seeking behaviors, environmental impacts, and policy debates are just a few examples.

The 3rd Annual Ethics Institute is packed with incredible, unique content featuring leading experts on AI and social work practice from Ohio and across the country! This one-day virtual conference will explore the full ethical landscape of artificial intelligence through a social work lens. We’ll unpack what AI is (and isn’t), examine its clinical implications for confidentiality, informed consent, and client well-being, and equip supervisors with tools to responsibly guide AI use. At the macro level, we’ll examine bias in algorithmic decision-making, the environmental impacts of AI infrastructure, surveillance concerns, opportunities for expanded access to information and support, improved productivity, and the evolving regulatory landscape, including what accountability should look like in behavioral health.

If we care about ethical practice, we cannot sit this conversation out.

Join us on April 29. Earn up to 9 CEUs. Learn more and register at www.naswoh.org/ethicsinstitute

This Black History Month, NASW Ohio honors the extraordinary contributions of Black social workers, while also acknowledging the hard truths within our profession’s history.

Although social work is rooted in social justice, Black leaders were historically marginalized, excluded from leadership, and not fully recognized for shaping the field.

Their advocacy, scholarship, and community leadership strengthened social work in ways that were too often overlooked.

We honor pioneers like: Mary Church Terrell; Dorothy Height; Whitney M. Young Jr.; E. Franklin Frasier; Lester Blackwell Granger; George Edmund Haynes; and the countless Black social workers whose impact continues today.

Acknowledgment must lead to action. NASW Ohio is committed to advancing racial equity, elevating Black voices, and ensuring our profession lives up to its core values.

Black history is social work history.

Despite all the challenges that you are faced with or are affected by, how do you remain hopeful? What is something that gives you hope? In times of uncertainty, hope can come from many places- the people we care about, the work we do, moments of progress, or simply the belief that change is possible. Taking a moment to reflect on what sustains us can help ground us and remind us that even in difficult times, there are still reasons to keep moving forward. We invite you to share what hope looks like for you.

By removing master's and doctoral programs from the definition of “professional degree,” the Department of Education will severely limit the amount of federal student loans that a student can receive. The new borrowing limit would be $20,500 annually, pricing many individuals out of graduate degrees in Social Work. This change has not been implemented and is still subject to the public comment period. This is where you can voice your opinion and impact the regulation. Happy Birthday, Dr. Carrilyn Stevens Long! NASW Ohio is stronger because of your leadership. From your years as Dean at Stark State College to your work today as Program Manager for Ohio State you have consistently opened doors for students and modeled what equity in action looks like. On Tuesday, February 10th, a group of Republican legislators introduced legislation that would change Ohio law to include discriminatory language and principles into child welfare and family law. The new bill, House Bill 693, would redefine what constitutes abuse and neglect, allow parents to deny their child's identity with no consequence, overturn local conversion therapy bans, limit fact-based trainings for state employees, threaten disciplinary action for state-licensed professionals, and prohibit foster and adoptive agencies from collecting date to ensure that q***r youth are placed into safe home. NASW Ohio stands with Ohio's q***r youth and reaffirms our duty to our Code of Ethics as providers. Contact your legislators to ask that they oppose HB 693 - www.legislature.ohio.gov
