Halloween wouldn’t be complete without some festive pumpkins and our teams at St. Francis-Emory Healthcare do that in style (with a pink twist of course). To celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness month, our colleagues joined to together to create pumpkin masterpieces in our Pink Pumpkin Decorating Contest. With a record number of entries this year, we found some hidden artists in our ranks.

Congratulations to 2-South and Nursing Director Angela Dobbins’ team who put together the winning entry with their Pink Gnome. Thank you for all our teams for creating a memorable contest to spread the word on the importance of early breast cancer detection and treatment.

Highlighting the importance of early detection when it comes to breast cancer is a message that St. Francis-Emory Healthcare emphasizes all year long (not just in October). Our Center for Breast Health’s John Cutrone, M.D., a Breast Imagining Radiologist, spoke with WTVM News Leader 9 Health Break about steps all women can take, starting with the importance of self-exams and yearly mammography appointments, recommended for women 40 and older.

Detecting breast cancer early in its smallest stage is vital. Visit https://www.mystfrancis.com/services/center-for-breast-center to learn more about our services, schedule your mammogram, or find a provider.

It was a joy to gather with former patients at our fifth annual St. Francis-Emory Healthcare Sunday’s Best Tea celebration and luncheon. More than 100 attendees united together, sharing stories of hope, resilience, and early detection leading to amazing outcomes. It's always important to have a support network after a breast cancer diagnosis, and our event allows women to gain continued strength and support together.

A very special thanks to WTVM’s Jason Dennis who kindly joined us as emcee. And thank you to our physicians and clinical team who put together this amazing community event keenly focused on breast cancer awareness for those we proudly serve.

The DAISY Award recognizes the extraordinary compassion and care nurses provide every day. Congrats to our latest DAISY Award recipient, MSICU’s Amanda Vega, RN, an amazing nurse that cares for our patients needing the highest level of care. 🌼🌼🌼

Vega was nominated by a thankful former colleague, who spoke about her kind nature when caring for a loved one. An excerpt from the nomination:

“I’ve finally built up the courage after losing my mom a year ago to acknowledge the most amazing nurse ever, Mandy Vega, RN. Needless to say, it was comforting for a former co-worker to take care of your mother with so much passion and enthusiasm. To begin with, my mom had been admitted and sadly began to decline rapidly. It wasn’t until my mom was in the care of Mandy and her team that I finally felt like I could rest knowing she was cared for by the best.

“As some may be able to relate, as the only person with a medical background and the oldest daughter of the patient, processing all of these events and relaying news to family was very tough for me … my former ICU coworker Mandy took the time to explain and repeat herself to each family member. This nurse cried with me and my family and checked on us days after losing my mom. We need more nurses like Mandy that are overly passionate about their job and enjoy caring for patients and their families! We love Mandy!"

St. Francis-Emory Healthcare always remembers its roots. Founded as a Christian ministry 75 years ago, our focus on faith and its importance to the healing process is more evident today than ever.

During this Spiritual Care Week, we proudly honor our Chaplain Services team, a group of dedicated individuals who proudly walk alongside patients, their loved ones and fellow team members during some of life’s most difficult moments.

Illness can bring with it questions of meaning, faith and hope. Our Chaplains pride themselves in meeting patients and their families where they are, offering prayer, a listening ear or a reassuring presence. With focus on emotional and soul care that respects many beliefs, cultures and traditions, our Chaplains are a steadying influence all hours of the day and night.

Thank you for all you do.

If you’re 40 or older, take time to take care of yourself – schedule a mammogram every year, a key to early detection and a prompt treatment plan.
