Obituary For Lyle Wayne Charter
Lyle Wayne Charter was born May 4, 1932, in Arbuckle, CA to Halbert D. and Marie A. (Kull) Charter. Known for his incomparable quick wit, countless individuals knew him as the "Cowboy Poet Laureate of Colusa County." Many say he was born "100 years too late" – but this life-long, hardworking almond, olive, and walnut farmer was also an authentic muleskinner, who lived life to the fullest, and leaves behind a lasting legacy. Lyle died peacefully April 17, 2026, after a brief illness.
His second home was anywhere there was a set of mountains where he could take a pack string of mules and a fly-fishing rod. He and his wife of nearly 60 years, Laurie, spent many years volunteering with the California Fish and Wildlife Service and the Back Country Horsemen of California to plant trout in high-country lakes. Other organizations who received his valuable time include the Free and Accepted Masons - Colusa Lodge No. 240, the Arbuckle Community Church, and the Arbuckle 4-H Club.
Lyle knew no strangers and would strike up conversations with anyone. He could educate them on everything from WWII history to how to shoe a horse or recite the most side-splittingly funny cowboy poem – and as his body became weak, his mind remained very sound. Though he only had a high school education (and if asked where he went to college, he would tell you, "the School of Hard Knocks"), Lyle was a gifted craftsman and could fabricate the most complex projects, including farm equipment and tools, wagons for mules and horses to pull, horse trailers, or spurs, bits and bridals, rarely even putting the plans down on paper. These talents were passed down through multiple generations of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Along with his parents, Lyle was preceded in death by his brother Raymond Charter, sister-in-law Mary (Young) Charter, and his granddaughter Holly Moorhead. He leaves behind his wife, Laurie, daughter Christine Charter Moorhead, son Jeffrey (Debbie) Charter, son Erick Charter, and daughter Kate (Cecil) Smith, as well as sisters Evelyn Jansen and Lorraine Davis. He also leaves behind six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was truly a devoted family man.
The last goodbye's the hardest one to say ... this is where the cowboy rides away. Happy trails, cowboy!
Graveside services will take place at the Arbuckle Cemetery on April 29, 2026 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Arbuckle Fire Department, the Arbuckle Community Church, or the charity of your choice.
