If you live with tinnitus, you may have heard the advice to “cut back on caffeine,” but many people aren’t sure why that recommendation comes up.
Caffeine can increase blood pressure and cause blood vessels to constrict slightly. For some individuals, that may reduce blood flow to the inner ear, which can make tinnitus more noticeable.
At the same time, if you regularly drink coffee, tea, or energy drinks, cutting back too quickly can lead to withdrawal symptoms like headaches, fatigue, irritability, and stress — which may temporarily make tinnitus seem louder.
If you’re experiencing tinnitus, small lifestyle adjustments may help for some people, but everyone’s experience is different. It’s always a good idea to speak with your physician before making significant dietary or lifestyle changes.
If tinnitus is affecting your daily life, the team at Ear Works Audiology can help evaluate your symptoms and discuss management options.
