Common question: Why are we giving my kid a tablet and more screen time? We understand… AAC can feel confusing and overwhelming at first.

Let’s clear a few things up:
⁃ AAC is not meant to replace speech and language
⁃ AAC will not prevent the progression of speech and language
⁃ It’s should not be viewed as screen time
⁃ We recommend AAC to increase access to communication!

Some children cannot access or consistently access speech and language due to motor, sensory, and linguistic difficulties. AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) provides access to communication when the body is unable to produce speech and language.

The earlier we support communication, the better the outcomes. Always.

💬 Have questions about AAC? Drop them below or send us a message, we’re always here to help.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) gives children another way to express their thoughts, share their needs, and connect with people around them.

Research consistently shows that AAC does not prevent speech development. In many cases, it supports and encourages spoken language.

The foundation of progress in speech therapy stems from relationship, trust, and safety. Evidence-based techniques, strategies, and approaches are important, but those tools are only as effective as the relationship they’re built on. We feel so lucky to build these relationships with the most amazing kids and families 🤍

Before Jordy’s Café existed… there’s a mom with a dream for her son 💙

Jordan is a client at Lakes Speech + Language who brings so much joy to everyone around him. He has Down syndrome, and his bright personality and determination inspire us every single week.

Jordan’s parents started Jordy’s Café with a powerful mission: to save up enough money to open a coffee shop that will provide meaningful employment opportunities for Jordan and other neurodiverse individuals in our community.

They’re also working to start a non-profit organization that will help children with special needs access therapy services they may not otherwise be able to afford.

Leading up to World Down Syndrome Day on March 21, we’re partnering all month long for sourdough + cookies for a purpose 🍞🍪

Every order helps Jordan’s family move closer to opening Jordy’s Café and supporting more families like theirs.

Speech therapy is so much more than speech. We help adult clients improve their swallowing, their speech clarity, their organizing and executive functioning, their word retrieval skills and so much more.

Communication and eating have a significant impact on quality of life. If you or someone you love is struggling, give us a call.
