Therapist Spotlight: Lauren! 👋🏻

Lauren is an experienced adult and adolescent speech-language pathologist who started with us in 2025. Lauren brings extensive experience from the University of Michigan and Corewell Health. Although she’s comfortable helping clients with a variety of diagnoses, her specialties are:

🧠 Neurorehabilitation: stroke, traumatic brain injury
🫶🏼 Dementia Care
đź’ś Stuttering
📣 Parkinson’s / LSVT certified

Outside of being an SLP, Lauren can be found soaking in the moments with her daughter, planning her next trip to Pittsburgh, exploring outside with her husband, or playing the latest board game with friends ♣️🎯

We are so lucky to have Lauren on our team - as both a clinician and a social media designer! Her clients are telling us they’re so glad to have found a therapist who truly understands them, who gives them meaningful strategies to use outside of the clinic, and who usually becomes family.

Valentine’s Day books, love notes to family members, pretend cookie baking, heart crafts, sensory bins & more! Themes aren’t just fun, they’re backed with research! 💗🫶🏼

According to Del Duca (2013), thematic instruction helps improve semantic mapping, receptive and expressive vocabulary, word retrieval skills, story retelling skills and more.

What counts as a word? 🗣️

Many parents don’t know that a word does not have to be spoken perfectly to be “counted” as a word. Many young children use word approximations for their first words. For example: saying “ha” for “hot.” It counts as a word long as the word/sound is:

👉🏼 consistent: spoken the same way
👉🏼 independent: the word/sound is spoken on their own
👉🏼 intentional: the word has a specific meaning

If your child is not using these examples, we can move to preverbal communication (more on that this week). As always, we are here to talk it through and make a plan for you and your little one! Early intervention is key!

Common Parent Question: How many words should my child be saying?

Although we look at more than words when it comes to communication, we do look at word acquisition for our neurotypical language learners. The second column is the milestone and the third column is around average.

Reach out today if you have any questions related to your child’s communication development!

*As noted above, these milestones are for neurotypical children. Our neurodiverse children may learn language in chunks through a gestalt language developmental process. We will post more on that soon.

Therapist Spotlight: Candice!

Candice is an experienced pediatric speech-language pathologist who started with us in the summer of 2023. Throughout her career, she’s worked in both medical and school settings. Although she’s comfortable helping most communicative difficulties, her specialties are:

👶🏼 Early childhood speech and language (birth - 3)
🗣️ Childhood apraxia of speech
🎶 Gestalt language processing (commonly seen as a language acquisition style with our autistic clients)

Outside of being an SLP, Candice keeps busy as a creative and fun boy mom of 2, as a puzzler (go compete against her at the Commerce Library puzzle challenges), and as a cycler on her Peloton 🚴🏼‍♀️

We are so lucky to have Candice on our team. We pick her brain daily, and often hear how parents feel more confident after talking with her about their toddler’s speech & language development!

Our Lakes SLP team celebrated the year last night! Good food, lots of laughs, and so much gratitude for this incredible group who show up for our community. It’s hard to believe that just a few years ago, we had our first Lakes SLP dinner here with just 3 of us. Now we’re a team of 7, and it feels pretty special going into 2026! 🤍🍀
