🌱Meet Carissa🌱

I love getting calls asking if she can come and forage something she has seen in our yard. Here she is foraging dandelions❤️🤣

Carissa Raney grew up in Virginia at the feet of two passionate plant enthusiasts who ran a wholesale nursery—so you could say she’s been “deep in the plants” since she could walk.

Today, Carissa runs the Locust Loves Pollinators initiative and helps moderate the Locust/Midland Garden & Plant Swap group, where she encourages others to create thriving, pollinator-friendly spaces.

She has spent years studying and teaching herbal medicine, organic and DIY gardening, foraging, and sustainable growing practices. While many would call her a plant expert, Carissa prefers to say, “Nobody can be an expert in plants—there’s simply too much to know.”

You’ll most often find her wandering outdoors sampling edible “weeds,” crafting herbal remedies, sharing knowledge with anyone who will listen (or even those who didn’t plan to), and on occasion—possibly judging your plant choices 😅

At our Gardeners in Bloom event Carissa will be teaching at 10:00 on permaculture and hugelkultur helping others build resilient, regenerative garden systems.

In a little under a year I've completed Barral's visceral manipulation courses. While there are still advanced courses out there, I'm proud to have finished 1-5.
So. What is visceral manipulation?

Did you know your organs need to move, glide, and slide just like your muscles and joints?

Visceral Manipulation is a gentle hands-on technique that works with the organs and their connective tissues. When these tissues become restricted, they can affect digestion, breathing, posture, and even pain patterns in the body. By restoring natural movement, the body can function more comfortably and efficiently.

Stay tuned for some upcoming opportunities to experience this work in my practice. So far the clients that have received it have responded positively.

Just a few of their comments:

"This helped my low back pain in a way that other massages haven't."
"That was magic. How did you even know I was hurting there?"
"I didn't know that some of my chronic pain had anything to do with my organs or stomach."

I want to take a moment to honor someone who was pivotal in me becoming a massage therapist. 15(ish) years ago I was young, lost, and feeling direction less in life. My coworker and friend Toye Entsminger would listen to me vent during our breaks. I would massage her shoulders and neck as we talked because she had a great deal of pain that affected her. One day she said "why don't you go to massage school?"
I had actually considered massage as a career but it was this conversation that started me seriously looking into programs and ultimately attending training. I've always credited Toye as being a big part of my journey to where I am now.
Rest in peace Toye. Your family, friends, and community definitely feel your loss.

Dear Clients, the monks with Walk for peace should arrive in Charlotte today. They may come through Concord as soon as tomorrow or Friday. It looks like their route passes pretty close to the office.
Please plan EXTRA time for traveling to or from the office as there may be road closures and increased traffic. You can check the most up to date route info on the walk for peace fb page or website.

I debated whether or not to share this on my business page. My grandmother passed shortly before Christmas and my grandfather followed shortly after passing last Monday. While I am back in the office today, I ask for your patience in responding to messages and fitting some of you back on the schedule.
