Her name was Sam, and she was nothing like we expected. A single mom with a one-year-old on her hip, a welder with grit and grease on her hands, and a hundred reasons why abortion felt like the only answer. She walked into Gate with a hard shell—years of hurt and disappointment stacked layer upon layer. But beneath all that? She was one of the sweetest souls you’d ever meet. It just took a little time for trust to break through the armor she had built to survive.
Her worries were real. Her family didn’t approve of her boyfriend. Her job as a welder meant constant exposure to lead and smoke. She believed keeping this baby wasn’t just hard—it was impossible.

When her first ultrasound was inconclusive, she agreed to return… but only because she wanted clarity before scheduling an abortion. We shared the Earn While You Learn program with her—education, material support, real help—but she brushed it off. She wasn’t planning to keep her baby. So we prayed.

On her way to the second appointment, her phone rang. It was her boss—offering her a new job in management. No more smoke. No more lead. No more danger to her baby. The timing was impossible to ignore, and something in her spirit softened, just a little.

Then the ultrasound began.

A strong, steady heartbeat filled the room—clear, undeniable, beautifully alive. She stared at the screen, surprised by the warmth she felt in her chest. Not what she expected… not what she thought she wanted… but something she couldn’t ignore.

In the counseling room afterward, she told her nurse and advocate about the new job. They gently reminded her that the biggest obstacle—the danger to the baby—was now gone. Maybe she could do this, after all?

Her response stunned them both. She took a deep breath and said, “Everything feels so good here. You’re all so kind… and convincing. Dang it! I just heard the heartbeat, and I have a new job that keeps the baby safe. Of course I have to keep this baby!”

Moments like this remind us: we don’t do this work alone. We are not the heroes—God is. We simply sit beside women like Sam as the Holy Spirit moves in ways only He can. It is an honor, a privilege, and a sacred calling to witness those moments when fear turns into hope, when impossibility turns into possibility, and when a mother’s heart opens to the life within her.

In order to address the cares of women and men in an unplanned pregnancy, GATE provides a trained Pregnancy Decision Coach to assist clients with pregnancy decisions.

We also provide Earn While You Learn group and individual classes on pregnancy, parenting, infant care, faith, relationships, and nutrition. We also offer DadStrong classes for men.

GATE cares about their clients and information is confidential. All services are FREE.
