This 49-year-old patient from Discovery Bay was diagnosed with right breast cancer. With a strong family history, she made the decision to have both breasts removed. That choice also made her an excellent candidate for breast reconstruction with implants.

At the time of her mastectomies, I placed temporary expanders to gradually stretch the skin and muscle to a size that matched her body. In a second surgery, those expanders were replaced with silicone gel implants. Finally, we completed her journey with ni**le reconstruction and tattooing, restoring the look of natural breasts.

For many women, reconstruction is an important part of recovery—not only physically, but emotionally as well. It is a privilege to help patients through this process and to witness their resilience firsthand.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to honor the strength of survivors, support those in the fight, and raise awareness about the options available after diagnosis.

This patient’s story is one example. At 58, she was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (cancer of the milk duct) after a routine mammogram and biopsy. Following a right mastectomy performed by another surgeon, she came to me to discuss immediate breast reconstruction. Together, we moved forward with her reconstruction and right ni**le reconstruction in the same surgical process.

For many women, breast reconstruction is not just about restoring the body, but also about reclaiming confidence and a sense of wholeness after cancer. I am grateful to walk alongside patients through this chapter of healing, and I deeply admire their resilience.
