Gaining Ground

Gaining Ground Gaining Ground grows organic produce for hunger relief with help from volunteers of all ages and abilities, who work and learn in our fields. For free.

We're also part of research studies to grow healthy soil systems through regenerative, no-till farming practices. Based in historic Concord, Massachusetts, Gaining Ground grows 125,000 pounds of organic produce for hunger relief with help from 2,500 volunteers of all ages and abilities, who work and learn in our fields. In short, we grow food and we give it away to people who need it. We work hard to grow healthy soil and high-quality produce, provide an exceptional experience to each volunteer, serve the needs of our recipients and maximize the generous support of our donors. Throughout the harvest season, produce from Gaining Ground’s farm goes to food pantries, meal programs and shelters in Greater Boston and Eastern Massachusetts. Our approach is local and sustainable—most of our produce is distributed within 20 miles of our farm and within 24 hours of harvest. Some groups use our produce to prepare a free meal distributed to people who need it. Others give it away as part of providing free food to people in need. In addition, we are participating in regional and national agricultural research projects to improve upon and expand methods of regenerative, no-till farming to grow healthy, more productive soils. These methods allow us to better withstand extreme weather events and can directly mitigate climate change by pulling carbon out of the atmosphere and putting it back into the soil, where it directly benefits crop health.

Today is the Spring Equinox!

One of the welcome signs of spring on the farm is the sight of these green sprouts coming up through their winter hay blanket. Do you know what we have growing here?

We are thrilled to introduce Joanna Flies as Gaining Ground’s Farm Manager. Joanna has farmed for more than twenty years on land throughout Michigan, Oregon, and Massachusetts. For nine seasons, Joanna grew vegetables and flowers for her own farming operation in Wayland, where her fresh produce was available to the public through CSA shares and farmer’s markets.

Please join us in welcoming Joanna to the team! We are grateful to have her expertise leading the crew as Gaining Ground continues to grow more food throughout the year.

Each spring, Welch's brings a team of new hires to Gaining Ground to volunteer together at the farm as part of their orientation. This hardy group was not deterred by the cold, rainy weather. Just look at those smiles! They leaned in and helped our farm crew complete a variety of tasks to help us prepare for the upcoming growing season.

Thanks, Welch's, for your generous support that helps us provide nutritious, locally grown food for our neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

For more than 20 years, local students have helped fight hunger through Gaining Ground’s Read for Seeds program. This annual read-a-thon uniquely combines fundraising, literacy, and community action to make a tangible difference.

Read for Seeds is simple. Whether through a classroom, a homeschool group, or as an individual, students collect pledges for the pages they read during a two-week period. Every dollar raised goes directly toward purchasing organic seeds that grow nutritious food for neighbors experiencing food insecurity. Participating students also have the opportunity to volunteer on-site, seeing firsthand how their efforts help the farm to flourish.

For more information on Read for Seeds and how you can participate, contact Allison at allison@gainingground.org

Do you have a teen curious about growing food or passionate about the environment and the outdoors?

Each summer, Gaining Ground welcomes teenagers of high school age (14-18 years old) to join us in the fields as part of our volunteer High School Farm Team (HSFT). This is an opportunity for youth to gain experience with Gaining Ground’s sustainable farming practices, work on a team, connect with the land, and learn more about how our hunger relief work fits into a broader picture of food insecurity within our communities.

As we look forward to a new growing season, we would like to thank Hartney Greymont, The Davey Tree Expert Company, for helping to provide just the right nutrient drench for our fruit trees last year. These nutrients feed the microorganisms that keep our trees healthy and productive!

A successful partnership with Minuteman High School provides students the opportunity to get field experience, literally, that complements the concepts they are learning in the classroom. The school offers a horticulture and plant science program major where students prepare for careers in sustainable landscape horticulture, plant science, turf management, and greenhouse management.

Groups of Minuteman students visit the farm weekly to volunteer and gain hands-on experience on a working farm with projects like planting and harvesting. In addition, students have the opportunity to practice other landscaping tasks like pruning trees and shrubs, managing invasive plants like bittersweet, and maintaining perennial plantings. These helpful visits begin in March, pause during summer break, and resume until November. We look forward to their return this spring!

Gaining Ground welcomed over 100 donors, volunteers, and partners for the annual Maple Sugaring Open House. Attendees visited the sugar shack to see how maple syrup is made, enjoyed seasonal snacks, and got to peek inside the greenhouse to see what's growing. A sweet opportunity for the Gaining Ground community to come together!
