Berries have often been called nature’s candy and for anyone who has every taken a bite of a fresh strawberry, that point is hard to argue. There is mounting evidence today that these little treats offer more than just delicious mid-day snacks. The list of benefits of berry consumption is staggering.

The New York Times reports that frozen berries can be more economical than fresh berries, due in part to the fact that there is less risk of waste through spoilage from frozen berries. If you’ve ever found yourself throwing out a bag of berries that has sat in your refrigerator for months, you know the unique brand of pain that comes from that kind of waste. Freezing berries gives them an incredibly long life span. When kept at a temperature at or below freezing, fruit can last for many years. The only risk you run is freezer burn, so when you’re opening your bags of fruit after leaving them in the freezer for an extended period, empty each bag separately into bowls so you can see if one bag is more burned than another without ruining the whole batch of fruit.

Berries have also been shown to be particularly adept at fighting cancer. A recent study by the Cancer Prevention Program of Ohio State University found that a steady diet of black raspberries decreases the development of oral, esophageal and colon cancers in rats. In one study by the same program, researchers found that rats who consumed a diet of whole black raspberries developed 50 percent fewer tumors than rats with a regular diet. Blueberries have been shown to be full of antioxidants, acai berries have been hailed as a “miracle berry” for their healing and energy-boosting properties and strawberries have been shown to have antioxidants which protect the heart, brain and eyes.

Freezing berries is a great way to increase the lifespan of these delicious health treasures. Simply wrap them up in a bag or container, make sure your freezer is set to a consistent temperature and is at least 75-percent full (keeping the freezer mostly full will help keep the temperature consistent) and walk away. Freezing berries is as simple as that.
