🚗 Understanding Breathalyzer Results: What Those Numbers Really Mean
If you’ve ever been asked to take a breathalyzer, you know how stressful it can feel. But understanding what the results actually mean can help take away some of the confusion.
A breathalyzer measures your Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) — the amount of alcohol in your bloodstream. In North Carolina (and most states), a BAC of 0.08% or higher is considered legally impaired for most drivers.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
• 0.02 – 0.03% – Light buzz; mild effects on mood and relaxation.
• 0.04 – 0.06% – Noticeable impairment in judgment and coordination.
• 0.08% and above – Legally impaired; reaction time and reasoning significantly reduced.
• 0.15% or higher – Considered an aggravated level in NC; may carry additional penalties and mandatory treatment recommendations.
It’s important to remember that BAC can be influenced by factors like body weight, food intake, metabolism, medications, and how quickly drinks were consumed.
At Breathe: A Center for Wellness, we help clients understand their results, complete their required assessments, and move forward with education and recovery — not shame.
