For the month of November, I will be collecting food and winter clothing for donation. With the current financial landscape putting strain on so many families, together we can make small steps to support our local communities. If you come into the office, you will see these boxes at the entry way downstairs. If I see you at your home and you’d like to make a donation, I’m happy to pick them up at one of our visits. I appreciate you all so much for helping me support NH families!

The last two weeks had me out of the clinic and on the road. First, PelviCon 2025, which is my favorite event of the year. I learned how to better serve my patients with persistent pain, neurodivergence, IBS, endometriosis, and lots more. Nothing is better than gathering in Atlanta with a group of badass and passionate pelvic rehab providers.

After leaving Atlanta, I went Austin for a little exploring with my husband. But the real reason I went was for another continuing education course. I had my eye on this one to better serve my active patients. I am now happy to say that I have completed my Barbell Rehab Method certification, which will allow me to keep people training around their pain. Brain gains were had over the last two weeks for sure.

Polycystic O***y Syndrome, or PCOS, is a condition that affects an estimated 🔟 million worldwide. It is considered a hormonal condition, though the exact cause is unknown. Environmental and genetic factors appear to be involved.

Despite the name, many people with PCOS do not have cysts on their ovaries. Diagnosis is therefore more than a pelvic ultrasound - it involves a thorough medical history & physical exam, blood tests, and imaging.

Symptoms include:
🚩Pressure, bloating, swelling, and/or pain in the lower abdomen
🚩Acne
🚩Excessive hair growth (facial & body hair) due to higher levels of androgens (“male” s*x hormones)
🚩Weight gain
🚩Irregular, heavy, and/or missed periods indicating problems with ovulation
🚩Thinning hair on the head
🚩Thick, velvety patches of skin under the arms, breasts, or on the back of the neck
🚩Headaches
🚩Mood swings, depression, anxiety
🚩Insomnia, poor quality sleep, sleep apnea

➡️ PCOS is one of the leading causes of female infertility.

Treatment is multifaceted - but lifestyle interventions have been proven to successfully manage the condition for many. This includes dietary strategies, exercise, sleep hygiene, stress management, and targeted supplements. For some, medications are needed.

Women with PCOS are at a higher risk of developing comorbid conditions, so it is important to manage the condition for long-term health. These risks include:
❌Pre-diabetes or diabetes - more than 50% will develop this by the age of 40
❌A 4-7 times increased risk of heart attack
❌High blood pressure
❌High cholesterol
❌Sleep apnea
❌Endometrial cancer due to lack of ovulation

A multidisciplinary team is the best way to manage. It varies person to person, but it could include gynecology, endocrinology, nutrition, personal training, physical therapy, acupuncture, mental health counseling, fertility specialists, cardiology, dermatology, medication management, functional medicine, or naturopathic medicine.

While it cannot be cured, it can be well managed! You can live well with the condition - many do.

Summer is winding down and kiddos are headed back to school, which means a lot of moms have more time to themselves (not that it’s ever a lot 😉). Fall is a season of transformation and letting go of things that no longer serve you, including that bladder leakage or pelvic pain. It’s never too late to start! Hop on over to my website (link in bio) and request an appointment today.
