Career Day at W.M. Irvin Elementary 🎒✨

Today our team from Life Touch Therapy visited W.M. Irvin Elementary to talk with 4th and 5th graders about what occupational therapy is and how we help kids with things like focus, handwriting, sensory regulation, and everyday independence.

Lots of questions, lots of exploring therapy tools, and hopefully a few future OTs in the making 😎

We love being able to support local schools and share what we do with our community!

Practicing ADLs in a daycare setting may look different than when practicing in a more natural learning environment, but us OT’s know how to adapt as we go 😉👏

Watch Mrs. Katie interact with her little friend here as they learn a skill that’ll support him for years to come! Notice how important playful redirection is when supporting attention and participation.

Stay tuned for part two!!

Most people see a toy. We see …

➡️ a nervous system learning how to organize itself!!

This activity targets reflex integration, specifically the ATNR reflex, by encouraging her to cross midline while maintaining a stable tabletop position.

When primitive reflexes remain active longer than they should, they can interfere with coordination, attention, posture, and fine motor skills.

By practicing controlled, intentional movement, her brain is learning to replace reflex-driven patterns with mature, coordinated ones.

This is what builds the foundation for skills like writing, dressing, and regulating her body.

It looks like play, but it’s building everything!!

Follow along with to see more why behind the play!

Using a preferred activity to build skills for a non-preferred one is one of our favorite OT strategies!!

When movement and balance are motivating, we can work in fine motor work for buttons, zippers, and other daily skills without power struggles. We call that purposeful play 👏

Who knew memes could be therapeutic? 🤭

We used What Do You Meme: Family Edition to practice identifying our Zones of Regulation, reading facial expressions, and talking about BIG feelings in a low-pressure, playful way.
For each card we discussed what the person might be feeling, what Zone they were in, and what they could do in that Zone to feel more regulated.

When play is fun, kids open up … and that’s where the real regulation work happens 💛✨

Try this at home!

➡️ Hula hoop + pillows + textured cushions =
instant obstacle course!!

Great for:
• Following multi-step directions
• Balance + core stability
• Asymmetrical movement patterns (supporting retained reflex work)
• Sensory exploration through the feet
• Motor planning + body awareness
• Dressing skills support

Therapy doesn’t have to look like drills
Movement + play is where the magic happens!!

🍓 “Playing with your food” isn’t bad manners—it’s brain-building!!

For many kids, new foods feel scary, unpredictable, or just plain overwhelming. When we invite them to touch, squish, sort, and move food around, we’re giving their sensory system a chance to explore without pressure to eat.

In this activity, we:
• Picked up whole fruit to explore weight, temperature, and texture
• Squished fruit with hands and utensils
• Used laminated pictures to create silly food art (hello, fruit hair! 😄)
• Practiced clean-up with hands (with napkins nearby to build tolerance and provide regulation) or utensils when it got too difficult
• Co-regulated when feelings got big, because emotional safety comes first … always!!

Why this works:
Hands-on food play supports sensory processing, reduces food anxiety, builds motor skills, and creates positive food experiences without forcing bites. For therapists, this is a beautiful way to grade tactile input, support praxis, and scaffold regulation during feeding-based play.

✨ Progress isn’t just what goes in the mouth, it’s what the brain and body learn along the way.

Snow Day Activity!! ❄️🌨️

Let’s support those fine motor goals with this rip-and-paste activity, and BONUS, build messy play tolerance by getting those hands all gluey, sticky, and gross!
