Over 94,000 people in Rockland County are forced to choose between food and basic necessities like rent and utilities.

Most are working.

Since 2019, the number of ALICE households—asset-limited, income-constrained, employed—has increased by 51%. These are our neighbors, doing everything right and still struggling.

Through food recovery, emergency food distributions, nutrition access, and advocacy, the Rockland Community Hunger Coalition is helping hard-working families put food on the table—because no one should have to choose between eating and surviving.

TOUCH provides food to local families for close to TWO MILLION nutritious meals a year! That makes a big difference between hunger and chronic illness controlling lives, or people reclaiming their health with dignity by having regular access to nutritious food.

Hunger and chronic disease are deeply connected. When families don’t have consistent access to nutritious food, conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension worsen. Medical costs rise. Hospital visits increase. And cycles of illness and poverty tighten their grip.

That’s why we believe food represents health, love and medicine.

This Hanukkah, many will be lighting the menorah with broken hearts. As we mourn the lives taken at Bondi Beach, we are reminded how fragile light can feel in moments of deep darkness.

Judaism teaches that a single flame can push back against the darkness. Hanukkah calls on us not to look away, but to add light — deliberately, courageously — even when hope feels thin.

At TOUCH, through food, care, and dignity, we strive to fulfill the mitzvah of caring for one another and to bring אור (light) where it is most needed.

May the lights of Hanukkah honor the souls we have lost, bring comfort to mourners, and strengthen our resolve to choose compassion over despair.
