Last Friday, our community showed up strong. Advocates, families, and providers stood together to make our voices heard for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

We were proud to hear powerful remarks from Katy, our Self-Advocacy President, alongside her mother Susan Sanchez, our CEO Jessica Pizzutello, and other inspiring speakers who shared why our community must be seen, heard, and supported.

Katy closed with a powerful call: “Governor Hochul, can you hear us?”

Thank you to the New York State and Federal elected leaders who stood with our community and listened.

Yesterday, we joined advocates from across New York at the State Capitol to demand stronger investment in services for people with disabilities.

Encouraging news followed — both the Senate and Assembly included a 4% increase in their one-house budget proposals. A step forward, but the work continues.

This Friday, we bring that advocacy home as 3,000+ advocates and 35 sister agencies unite for the Rally in the Valley to keep the momentum going.

Across our programs this week, individuals and staff have been preparing — creating signs and getting ready to raise their voices.

Because this isn’t just a funding issue — it’s an affordability crisis.

Investment in IDD services must be nonnegotiable.

February did not slow down 🧡

We celebrated birthdays, traveled across the world, cooked up delicious meals, danced like no one was watching, welcomed the Lunar New Year, and packed in plenty of recreation and outdoor fun along the way.

During Black History Month, we honor Haben Girma — a disability rights advocate whose leadership is shaping the future.

As the first Deafblind graduate of Harvard Law School, Haben has dedicated her career to advancing accessibility, equity, and civic participation for people with disabilities.

Her work reminds us that access to education, technology, and democracy are not privileges — they are civil rights.

Her story shows us that one voice can expand opportunity. One voice can open doors. One voice can shape the future.

Today, we continue that legacy through advocacy. Our calling campaign is a collective push to ensure the NYS budget fully supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and the workforce that makes community living possible.

When we use our voices, we strengthen our communities.

During Black History Month, we honor Brad Lomax — a disability rights activist whose leadership helped change history.

As a Black disabled advocate and participant in the historic 504 Sit-In of 1977, Brad helped push the federal government to enforce civil rights protections for people with disabilities.

Because of that movement, disability discrimination became recognized as a violation of civil rights — strengthening protections for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities across the country.

His story reminds us that one voice can spark a movement. One movement can change systems.

Today, we continue that legacy through advocacy. Our calling campaign is a collective push to ensure the NYS budget fully supports people with IDD and the workforce that makes community living possible.

When we raise our voices together, change happens.

The Arc Rockland

We will make available to individuals with developmental disabilities circumstances and opportunities that will lead to an ever-improving quality of life which will allow them to participate fully in society's mainstream.

Thus, we will continually strive to provide programs, services and supports through which individuals can gain maximum effectiveness in the world in which they live; and we will continually seek to ensure and protect those meaningful situations which provide them with dignity, pride in their abilities, a sense of accomplishment and the respect of society.

Strong roots—conceived more than 60 years ago by a small group of dedicated parents, today The Arc provides supports and services to more than 1200 people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities from infancy through the senior years. In areas of education, employment, housing and recreation, The Arc Rockland ensures that people are full members of the broader community. A staff of more than 650 professionals help to create a lifetime of abilities for the people in our care. A volunteer Board of Directors and a volunteer Foundation Board are integral aspects of The Arc.
