On this day, December 26th, we remember the 38 Dakota warriors who were executed in Mankato, Minnesota, in 1862. It remains the largest mass ex*****on in U.S. history, ordered by President Abraham Lincoln following the U.S.-Dakota War. This atrocity was not just an act of violence—it was a culmination of broken treaties, stolen land, and a deliberate attempt to erase the Dakota people and our way of life.

The pain of that day ripples through generations, but so does the strength and resilience of the Dakota people. Today, we honor the lives of our relatives and reflect on their courage in the face of unimaginable injustice.

Let us also commit to learning from this history, amplifying Indigenous voices, and supporting efforts to heal and uplift Native communities. As we remember the Dakota 38, may we walk forward with compassion, respect, and a shared commitment to justice.

A nearly 300-mile journey ends in Mankato this week to mark the 161st year anniversary of one of the grimmest chapters in Dakota history, the hanging of 38 men after the U.S.- Dakota War. Riders hope their work will bring more understanding of this history.
