Using therapy tools to help elicit new sounds are great (mirror, tongue depressor, picture cues, etc.)… but once a new sound is elicited what specific approach are you using to remediate the speech sound disorder?

➡️ If the deficit is PHONOLOGICAL, consider your options….

💡cycles approach
💡contrastive approaches
💡complexity approach
💡and so many others there are too many to list!

➡️ If the deficit is ARTICULATION, are you:

💡utilizing motor learning principles to establish new motor plans and encourage generalization?

➡️ If the deficit is MOTOR SPEECH, are you not only using those same motor learning principles, but utilizing evidence-based interventions that address the movement of speech, like:

💡Dynamic Temporal & Tactile Cueing (DTTC) or
💡Rapid Syllable Transition Treatment (ReST), to name a couple.

➡️ And if, like most of my kids, they have a MIXED SPEECH SOUND DISORDER, then consider what aspect of particular approaches may best suit that particular child.

Yeah R isn’t complicated at all 🥴

How do you cue all these lingual movements for correct tongue placement for /ɹ/?

Using metaphors can be one way…

🌮“Taco tongue” can help get those sides elevated and tongue body lowered.

🥣 Shaping the tongue like a bowl can help elevate the front half along with elevating the sides and lowering the body.

Sometimes simplifying all those movements into once “shape” can help with placement for kids.

Now presenting, our first new Hubble image!

Nicknamed the Needle’s Eye Galaxy, NGC 247 is a spectacular dwarf spiral galaxy about 11 million light-years away from us.

This image zooms into the very edge of the galaxy. Below the edge of the galaxy’s disk, smaller and more distant galaxies are visible, as well as a very bright foreground star that lies between us and NGC 247.
