We ♥️ Our Veterans! We Proudly accept Veterans Choice Plus.

On March 23, 2018 🎊🏛️Congress Passed Legislation Expanding Veteran Access to Nondrug Chiropractic Services

(From an ACA Release, 4:14pm on Friday, March 23, 2018) - The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) announced today that Congress, with the passage of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2018, has approved a plan to expand access to chiropractic's nondrug approach to pain relief to veterans, many of whom suffer from back pain and other musculoskeletal conditions resulting from their service.
The Senate voted 65-32 to approve the $1.3 trillion omnibus spending package early Friday, less than 24 hours ahead of what would have been a government shutdown. The vote follows House passage, and the bill now heads to the president's desk for his signature.

Supported by several veterans groups and championed in Congress by Sens. Jerry Moran (R-Kansas), Jon Tester (D-Mont.), Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), the approved language calls for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to expand the availability of chiropractic services at no fewer than two medical centers or clinics in each Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) by no later than Dec. 31, 2019, and at no fewer than 50 percent of all medical centers in each VISN by no later than Dec. 31, 2021.

The measure also, for the first time, codifies and broadens chiropractic services in the VA to include services provided by doctors of chiropractic under the Preventive Health Services and Medical categories--in addition to existing coverage under Rehabilitative Services--placing chiropractors in service categories previously closed to them.
Currently, veterans have access to chiropractic services at more than 70 major VA treatment facilities in the United States, but nearly 100 VA sites offer little to no availability. This disparity comes at a time when the need for drug-free options for musculoskeletal conditions is urgent. VA data cites "diseases of the musculoskeletal system/connective system" such as back pain as the No. 1 ailment experienced by veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan who access VA treatment. Moreover, surveys show that, similar to the civilian population, many veterans struggle with prescription painkiller (opioid) addiction.

"For many years, veterans have had only limited access through the VA health care system to the essential services provided by chiropractors. The bill that Congress passed today will significantly contribute to giving veterans better access to new, nondrug options for their pain," said ACA Interim President N. Ray Tuck, Jr., DC.

Soon after this release was received, national news sources reported that the President signed the measure this afternoon, Friday, March 23

FDA Strengthens Warning of Heart Attack and Stroke Risk for Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

Next time you reach into the medicine cabinet seeking relief for a headache, backache or arthritis, be aware of important safety information for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

FDA is strengthening an existing warning in prescription drug labels and over-the-counter (OTC) Drug Facts labels to indicate that nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can increase the chance of a heart attack or stroke, either of which can lead to death. Those serious side effects can occur as early as the first few weeks of using an NSAID, and the risk might rise the longer people take NSAIDs. (Although aspirin is also an NSAID, this revised warning doesn’t apply to aspirin.)

The OTC drugs in this group are used for the temporary relief of pain and fever. The prescription drugs in this group are used to treat several kinds of arthritis and other painful conditions. Because many prescription and OTC medicines contain NSAIDs, consumers should avoid taking multiple remedies with the same active ingredient.
The Risks and What’s New

Prescription NSAIDs are an important treatment for the symptoms of many debilitating conditions, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis‎, gout and other rheumatological and painful conditions. OTC NSAIDs are used to temporarily reduce fever and to treat minor aches and pains such as headaches, toothaches, backaches, muscular aches, tendonitis, strains, sprains and menstrual cramps. Common OTC NSAIDs include ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and naproxen (Aleve). In addition, some combination medicines that relieve various symptoms, such as multi-symptom cold products, contain NSAIDs.

“Be careful not to take more than one product that contains an NSAID at a time,” says Karen M. Mahoney, M.D., deputy director of FDA’s Division of Nonprescription Drug Products. How will you know? Check the list of active ingredients in the Drug Facts label.

The labels for both prescription NSAIDs and OTC NSAIDs already have information on heart attack and stroke risk. In the coming months, FDA will require manufacturers of prescription NSAIDs to update their labels with more specific information about heart attack and stroke risks. FDA will also request that the manufacturers of OTC NSAIDs update the heart attack and stroke risk information in Drug Facts labels.

FDA added a boxed warning to prescription drug labels for this risk in 2005. More recent data and information are prompting FDA to update NSAID labeling. Today we know that the risk of heart attack and stroke may occur early in treatment, even in the first weeks.

“There is no period of use shown to be without risk,” says Judy Racoosin, M.D., M.P.H., deputy director of FDA’s Division of Anesthesia, Analgesia, and Addiction Products.

People who have cardiovascular disease, particularly those who recently had a heart attack or cardiac bypass surgery, are at the greatest risk for cardiovascular adverse events associated with NSAIDs.

FDA is adding information in the drug label for people who already have had a heart attack. This vulnerable population is at an increased risk of having another heart attack or dying of heart attack-related causes if they’re treated with NSAIDs, according to studies.

But the risk is also present in people without cardiovascular disease. “Everyone may be at risk – even people without an underlying risk for cardiovascular disease,” Racoosin adds.

What Consumers Should Do

NSAIDs are effective treatments for pain, inflammation and fever. Consumers can still take them but should be aware of this increased risk of heart attack or stroke, especially at higher doses.

“As always, consumers must carefully read the Drug Facts label for all nonprescription drugs. Consumers should carefully consider whether the drug is right for them, and use the medicine only as directed. Take the lowest effective dose for the shortest amount of time possible,” Mahoney says.

When using prescription NSAIDs, read the consumer-friendly Medication Guide attached to your filled prescription, which provides important safety information.

If you have heart disease or high blood pressure, consult a health care provider before using an NSAID. Balance the benefits of NSAIDs with the possible risks and weigh your options. If you take low-dose aspirin for protection against heart attack and stroke, you should know that some NSAIDs, including ibuprofen and naproxen, can interfere with that protective effect.

Stop taking NSAIDs and seek medical help if you experience symptoms that might signal heart problems or stroke, such as chest pain, trouble breathing, sudden weakness in one part or side of the body, or sudden slurred speech.

Reduce your risk factors for heart disease and stroke. “Smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes are significant risk factors for these conditions,” Mahoney says. “If you smoke, work on quitting. See your doctor regularly to find out if you have these other strong risk factors, and commit yourself to taking care of them and of your health.”

Does Your Favorite Chocolate Treat Contain TOXIC Levels of Lead and Cadmium? Check This List!

Consumer health watchdog As You Sow released results today showing that 35 of 50 chocolate products tested, including chocolate bunnies and eggs, expose consumers to lead and cadmium above levels set by California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act.

Testing commissioned by As You Sow, and conducted at independent laboratories, indicates that the chocolate products contain lead and/or cadmium, and they fail to provide the legally required warning to consumers.

As You Sow has filed legal notices against chocolate manufacturers, including Trader Joe’s, Hershey’s, Green and Black’s, Lindt, Whole Foods, Kroger, Godiva, See’s Candies, Mars, Theo Chocolate, Equal Exchange, Ghirardelli, Earth Circle Organics, and more, for failure to warn of lead and/or cadmium in their chocolate products.

“Lead exposure is associated with neurological impairment, such as learning disabilities and decreased IQ, even at very low levels. In fact, there is no safe level of lead for children,” said Eleanne van Vliet, MPH, As You Sow’s Environmental Health Consultant.

“As underscored by the Flint disaster, humans have contaminated our environment with lead, and now we must do everything in our power to protect ourselves and children, who are the most vulnerable of us, from every possible exposure,” said Sean Palfrey, MD, a pediatrician and Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health at Boston University School of Medicine. “Young children and pregnant women especially should avoid exposure to lead.”

“Lead and cadmium accumulate in the body, so avoiding exposure is important, especially for children,” explained Danielle Fugere, As You Sow President. “Our goal is to work with chocolate manufacturers to find ways to avoid these metals in their products.”

Scientists have linked chronic cadmium exposure to kidney, liver, and bone damage in humans. Children are more susceptible to especially susceptible to even from low doses over time. Animal studies associate cadmium exposure with decreased birth weight, neurobehavioral problems, and male reproductive harm.

Recent revelations of lead contamination in water in Flint, Michigan raised awareness that lead is irrefutably linked to neurological impacts in children.

10 Reasons you should not consume soy products.

Despite mounting evidence to the contrary, mainstream nutritional guidelines have instructed Americans to eat soy and drink soy milk. BUT soy milk is not a healthy choice. By drinking soy milk you are not doing yourself a favor, you are destroying your health. Please, take a look at these reasons why you should avoid soy milk.

Soymilk Ingredients:

Soymilk (Filtered Water, Whole Soybeans), Cane Sugar, Sea Salt, Carrageenan, Natural Flavor, Calcium Carbonate, Vitamin A Palmitate, Vitamin D2, Riboflavin (B2), Vitamin B12.

TOP TEN REASONS TO AVOID SOY MILK
1.Soybeans contain large quantities of natural toxins or “antinutrients”. Drinking just two glasses of soy milk daily can significantly alter a woman’s menstrual cycle.
2.Soy has been found to increase the body’s need for vitamin B12 and vitamin D.
3.Soybeans also contain haemagglutinin, a clot-promoting substance that causes your red blood cells to clump.
4.99% of soy is genetically modified. It contains one of the highest contamination by pesticides of any of our foods.
5.Soybeans and soy products contain high levels of phytic acid, which inhibits assimilation of calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, and zinc.
6.Soy foods contain high levels of toxic aluminum, which negatively effects the nervous system the kidneys and has been linked to the onset of Alzheimer’s.
7.Soy contains a compound resembling vitamin B12 that cannot be processed by your body. Thus, soy foods can contribute to B12 deficiency.
8.Fragile soy proteins are exposed to high temperatures during processing in order to make soy protein isolate and textured vegetable protein, making them dangerous for human digestion.
9.Soy contains toxic isoflavones. The soy isoflavones genistein and daidzein can stimulate existing breast cancer growth showing risk in consuming soy products if a woman has breast cancer. (Annals of Pharmacotherapy 2001 Sep;35(9):118-21).
10.Soy contains plant estrogens, called phytoestrogens, which disrupt endocrine function and lead to infertility and breast cancer in women.

Carrageenan in Soy Milk

Many scientific, peer-reviewed studies found that food-grade carrageenan can cause gastrointestinal inflammation, ulcerations, lesions and even colon cancer in laboratory animals. Additionally, recent studies funded by the American Diabetes Association have linked the consumption of food-grade carrageenan to insulin resistance and glucose intolerance in mice.

Witch hazel, also known as winter bloom or spotted alder, is actually a flowering shrub common in North America. The leaves bark, and twigs of witch hazel are high in tannins. Tannins are found in any natural astringent because of their ability to tighten, dry and harden tissues. It has many beneficial properties, including antiviral, antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It contains Gallic acid, flavonoids, resin, oils and tannins, all of which promote health. The unique mixture of properties and health-promoting components makes witch hazel a product that can benefit you in a wide variety of ways.

Native Americans have been using witch hazel water as a medical astringent for centuries. The wonderful thing about witch hazel is that it’s 100% natural and cheap too. Because it has so many uses, it’s a great addition to any medicine cabinet.

4. Shrink Swollen Veins

Witch hazel is also a good remedy for varicose vein pain and discomfort. When using witch hazel to relieve varicose veins, soak a cloth in a solution of warm water and witch hazel extract and lay it on the legs i.e. where the varicose veins are visible. Doing this will instantly reduce swelling and pain. Witch hazel relives varicose veins pain and discomfort by tightening the veins.

5.Neutralize Contact Dermatitis

This is another notable skin benefit of witch hazel. On top of controlling spots and blemishes, witch hazel also relives swelling and reduces itching caused by poison ivy and poison oak. Witch hazel is therefore an important accessory when going for camping, hunting, strolling in the woods etc.

6.Fade Bruises and Blemishes

Witch hazel is also used to speed up the time required to heal bruises. In case you have those stubborn bruises which take the longest time to heal, you can rub witch hazel solution on the bruises regularly to fasten the healing time. In order to fade bruises and blemishes effectively, with using witch hazel, apply the extract on the affected area using a witch stick or cotton ball. It is however important to seek medical attention before doing this.

7.Treating Sunburn

Witch hazel is popular for healing damaged skin however. It is also effective for treating skin inflammation as is the case with sunburn. Witch hazel is used for treating and soothing sunburn even in cases where the inflammation isn’t obvious. When used to treat sunburn, witch hazel reduces healing time and prevents skin flaking and peeling. You should mix some witch hazel with your aloe vera gel next time you need to treat sunburn.

8.Stop Bleeding

Many dermatologists have been on record endorsing witch hazel as the best natural alternative to Neosporin. Applying a dab of witch hazel cleanses cuts protecting them against infection and promoting quick healing.

Swimmer’s Ear or Otitus externa is caused by microbial infection of the ear canal. You should use an eye dropper and insert several drops of witch hazel into each ear to dry up pus, clear away the excess oil, and break up wax and debris that may be clogging the ear canal. Allow your ears to drain, and then clean them gently with a cotton swab or cosmetic pad.

STUDY : A Pinch Of Turmeric As Effective As An Hour Of Exercise

Undoubtedly, exercising is of vital importance, but newest studies have discovered that the turmeric extract is also beneficial for maintaining cardiovascular health. In particular, it is especially effective in women who are experiencing age-related negative changes in the arteries.

Unfortunately, conventional medicine would not even try to test the effect of this ingredient, but doctors instantly avoid the turmeric’s role against heart diseases. In contrast, a growing number of studies show that turmeric provides great effects in cases of cardiovascular diseases.

The last year’s study in the American Journal of Cardiology pointed out that turmeric extract reduces the heart attacks after bypass by 56%. This study also includes another previous astonishing study from 2012, which claims that curcumin, the primary polyphenol in turmeric which gives the turmeric its golden color, is proven to be effective in improving the vascular function in women after menopause similar to aerobic training.

This study, published in journal Nutrition Research, was conveyed on 32 women after menopause and lasted for 8 weeks. The 32 women were divided in 3 groups: curcumin, exercise and non-treatment control.

The researchers examined the health of the inner lining of the blood vessels which is known as endothelium. They used ultrasound to measure the flow-mediated arterial dilation which shows the arterial elasticity and endothelial function.

In case the inner lining of the blood vessels changes due to some factor, that change would lead to development of atherosclerosis. Therefore, in order to prevent the mortality due to heart diseases, we should try to find an effective solution to reduce, prevent or reverse the endothelial dysfunction.

The first group (curcumin group) consisted of women who consumed 150g turmeric extract every day for 8 weeks which equals 25 g of nanoparticle curcumin. During the course of the study, these women made no alterations of their diet, and they didn’t exercise.

The second group was exercising aerobic more than 3 times a week. Besides the 2-3 supervised trainings, they had additional training at home. Also, they were riding a bike and walking for 30-60 long minutes. In the first phase of the training, 60% of the participants had maximal heart rate and 70-75% maximal heart rate later.

The researchers found an increased flow-mediated dilution in the curcumin and exercise group so they stated:

“The present study showed that regular ingestion of curcumin or regular aerobic exercise training significantly improved endothelial function. The magnitude of improvement in endothelial function to the same extent, suggesting that curcumin may prevent the age-associated decline in endothelial function in postmenopausal women.”

Even though this study promotes the health properties of turmeric thus stimulating people to start consuming it, turmeric nor any other supplement should replace regular exercising. On the other hand, extra workout cannot replace the turmeric’s role in maintaining the health and preventing diseases.

The combination of the two is the best solution as it merges the health benefits of the two methods. Therefore, although the study was conveyed separately, the best results are achieved by combining turmeric consumption with regular exercise.

The same researchers conducted another study in 2012, published in the American Journal of Hypertension. Namely, this time, the research investigated the combined effect of exercise and curcumin together in women after menopause and the way this combination improves the heart muscle stress tolerance.

The findings promoted that “regular endurance exercise combined with daily curcumin ingestion may reduce LV [left ventricular] afterload to a greater extent than monotherapy with either intervention alone in postmenopausal women.”

Chronic heightened left ventricular afterload is related to aortic valve disease and high blood pressure and can lead to pathological hypertrophy of the area. Therefore, the conclusion of this study was again that the best effects are achieved by the combination of turmeric and exercising.

Furthermore, this combination also alleviated osteoarthritis symptoms and it is extremely beneficial in cases of pain and inflammation after workout.
