A barking cough that sounds almost like a seal can be a sign of croup, a common viral infection that causes swelling around the voice box and windpipe. This swelling can make breathing noisy and coughs sound harsh or raspy.

Croup most often affects children between six months and three years old and typically follows a few days of mild cold symptoms such as runny nose, congestion, and low fever. Symptoms often worsen at night.

Most cases of croup are mild and improve within three to five days with supportive care. When in doubt, contacting your child’s provider for personalized guidance is always encouraged, especially if symptoms seem severe or persist. 🩺✨

“It started as just a little cough…” 🥼🩺💚

When parents first hear about RSV, it can sound like just another cold, but for babies and young children, it’s often much more serious.

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is a common seasonal virus that affects the lungs and breathing passages. While many older children and adults experience it as a mild cold, infants, especially those under 12 months, can develop deeper respiratory infections such as bronchiolitis or pneumonia.

Each fall and winter, we see RSV spread quickly through schools, daycares, and families. What looks like a “simple cold” in one sibling can cause serious breathing trouble in a baby brother or sister.

The good news is that early recognition and supportive care make a big difference. If your child’s breathing becomes fast, noisy, or if they have trouble feeding, it’s time to call your pediatrician right away.

Our team at The Children’s Clinic of Conway & Greenbrier is here to help families navigate RSV season safely with expert guidance, early detection, and gentle care for our tiniest patients. 🩺💚
