The best diet

Do you know what the best diet is? The one that helps you reach your goals with the food that you’re willing to eat or unwilling to give up.

Yes, I’m being a bit cheeky.

It’s still true. A person who is focused on minimizing cancer risk and is vegetarian needs a different diet than the person focused on brain health who has high sensitivity to a lot of vegetables.

The best thing you can do is determine your goal, identify the foods that will help you get there and then decide which ones you’re willing to eat. It’s also helpful to know which foods will prevent you from getting there and decide which ones you’ll avoid. Once you decide what to avoid, “cheating” on your diet is really just cheating yourself.

What’s the best diet for you?

Can't versus don't

When you tell yourself or others that you can’t do something (that tempts you), you’re destined to fail. If you are trying to break a daily ice cream habit, saying, “I can’t eat ice cream.” is asking for trouble. You’re sending a message of deprivation built on willpower.

If you want to be successful, take the willpower out of it. When someone offers you ice cream, say, “No thank you, I don’t eat that.” or “No thank you, I only eat ice cream on Friday nights.” When you reframe things as don’t, there is no need for willpower.

Have you been struggling to give up behaviors that you can’t do? What would happen if you decided that you don’t do that?

No right answers

When working on creative projects, there are no right answers. One of the challenges this creates is how to know when you’re done. At some point, you have to call pencils down and put your work out there. As Steve Jobs said, real artists ship.

When other people see the end result, they won’t see all the different versions you considered. Even though some people may have preferred other versions, they’ll never know the difference.

If you read my blogs on [my website] site, you might have noticed some design changes over the last few weeks. I have been trying to do a little each day to refresh our website and as I learn new things, I experiment with different looks. My biggest challenge is knowing when to stop tweaking. If you typically read the blog on email, read a post on the site and let me know what you think.

When you’re being creative, how do you know that you’re done?

Another random blog post from my collection:

No news is good news

I cannot figure out why I keep seeing messages suggesting there’s no need to panic. I’m pretty sure that any rational person knows that there’s never a good time to panic. If I freak out, your “don’t panic” social media post is probably not going to talk me off the ledge.

(I suppose I’m not supposed to take “don’t panic” literally. Still, people with these messages might be more effective if they changed their focus from what to avoid to what they want.)

The real challenge is keeping people in a rational state of mind. If we want to do that, maybe we’d be better off avoiding news organizations that depend on ratings for profitability. The “If it bleeds it leads” mentality is probably not helping.

If you gave up the news, what would you lose that’s worth keeping?

Coming up with a business name is a challenge. For a small business like ours, we wanted something memorable that explains a bit of what we do. SimplyBetter Coaching captures some of our core principles:
- No matter where we are today, we can be better tomorrow
- Simple steps are easy to do correctly
- Over time, many small changes add up to life-changing improvements
- Slow and steady changes tend to be more sustainable; these are the changes that matter
- Everyone can benefit from working with a coach

Think about the best improvements you have made. Were they fast and dramatic or slow and steady?

Message me to get started with movement therapy, coaching or group exercise classes.

Another old blog post unearthed by my random post button (see comments for link).

We had the joy of the smoke alarm battery notifying us it needed a change in the middle of the night. Perhaps we could have slept through it, but Roli was having none of that. Apparently he associates the chirping of smoke alarms with impending doom, so there was no sleep to be had until I changed the battery.

Is it me, or does it always seem to happen at an inopportune time? That got me wondering. Does it really always happen in the middle of the night or do I forget the times that it happens during the day? Perhaps we should forget about the sleepless night and celebrate the fact that there was no fire.

What do you do to downplay bad luck and focus on your good luck?

Towards the end of 2018, I started a daily writing challenge. After 30 days, I started publishing and was not sure how long I would keep going. To date I have published more than 550 blog posts, most of which are 2-minute reads. Random post from my collection:

It will only take a minute

Getting back to a daily tidying habit is refreshing. It has reminded me of the little things we do (or don’t do) that add up to something bigger. Little things like putting dishes and clothes away before going to bed.

“It will only take a minute” can be a good reason to do something now or a good reason to put it off until tomorrow. It’s just a minute anyway, so what’s the difference?

One reason to do it now is to tie up a loose end. The more we complete, the better we feel. Starting the day with fewer loose ends feels better than you might expect.

Do you finish the little things now or leave them for later?
