ADOPT BIG

More to love. Snuggle buddies that double as weighted blankets. Long, slobbery tongues, big, floppy ears, and happy, wagging tails. It's no small thing; these big dogs are looking for homes.

We specifically included here the ACC dogs that weigh 55 pounds or more. We have many dogs that fall in the 30-40 pound range.

Like all pets, these dogs are individuals, each with a unique personality and preferences. Some are giant couch potatoes, others thrive on a lot of exercise. Some are independent, while others choose to cuddle every chance they get.

Visit the ACC and adopt FEE-FREE! We open at 10:30 a.m. today.

MONTHLY STATS: JANUARY 2026

As of this posting, 261 total animals are in ACC care.
This includes available pets, pets awaiting reclaim, pets not yet available, and pets held for legal reasons.

Of that 261:
77 are currently in foster homes
81 are available for adoption

In January 2026, the ACC saw:
204 pets come into our care (intakes). This includes 103 stray animals.
31 pets reclaimed by owners
49 pets transfer to partner shelters and rescues
90 pets adopted

January was a magical month, as we saw our longest-stay resident, Danica (pictured here), adopted after 607 days in our care. Stay tuned for more of Danica's story, coming later this month.

DOGGY DAY OUTS & SLEEPAWAYS

Did you know the ACC offers short-term fostering, as short as a day or a weekend?

Our Doggy Day Out program allows community members to take available shelter pets out for a day. This day could consist of walks around popular spots, a visit to the pet store, a trip through the drive-thru for a pup cup, and more (as long as community members are following laws and rules of businesses).

Sleepaways allow pets to sleep over. These are typically no more than two or three nights, and are popular over weekends. Sleepaways allow the pet to decompress from the stress of the shelter. Extended stays in the shelter environment can cause higher stress levels in pets.

Both of these programs are considered enriching for the pet. They provide chances for the pet to gain experiences they likely won't get in a shelter (cuddling on the couch while watching a movie, or riding in a car and walking on the beach).

February is a time we talk about our hearts, whether its love or cardiovascular health. When it comes to our pets, heart-based conversations often center on heartworm infections.
Heartworm infections are spread through mosquito bites. You can learn more about heartworm from the American Heartworm Society.
At the Animal Care Center, all pets in our care are placed on a preventative, regardless of heartworm infection status. This is a common and acceptable practice in animal shelters, where full heartworm adulticide is not always possible.

Today is National Wear Red Day and February is American Heart Month - a time when all people can focus on their cardiovascular health, as well as the cardiovascular health of their pets. It's also an ideal time to discuss heartworm disease with your clients.

The AVMA has tools and resources to help you have those conversations. Find out more important information here 👉: https://bit.ly/4b3EaqE ❤️ 🐶🐱❤️

HEARTWORM ROUND UP

The ACC is covering the cost of treatment for heartworm-positive pets adopted before March 1, 2026. That includes the pets you see featured here!

A heartworm positive status doesn't mean a pet is any less deserving of love or a second chance. Heartworm treatment is common and available. Heartworm is also preventable. While in ACC care, pets receive a preventative, which helps keep infections from worsening. This is a common and acceptable practice in the sheltering environment, where full treatment is often not possible due to the pet's needs.

(Side note: Heartworm is transmitted through mosquito bites. Pets can be infected by a mosquito that bites a wild animal (like coyotes, foxes, etc.) so it's important that pets are on a preventative and/or tested regularly. Talk with your primary veterinarian for more information.)

You can learn more about each of these pets on our website.
