Good morning! It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer; that’s too high. Today I had to get a diagnostic mammogram and an ultrasound due to the symptoms I’ve been experiencing. Thankfully, the radiologist said my mammogram and ultrasound were both normal! However, she’s requesting that I get an MRI of my breasts due to the symptoms. I’m praying 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 that all is well. I have a family history of cancer on my mother’s side and my father’s side, so I don’t play around with getting my annual mammograms and additional screenings when needed. Ladies, please get your annual mammograms, pay attention to your bodies, do your monthly self-breast examinations, report your family history to your doctor, reduce your alcohol intake, exercise, eat healthier, don’t smoke, reduce stress, and practice self-care.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Sadly, my brother Darin passed away on August 21st from Stage 4 Prostate Cancer. On September 6th, we celebrated his life with his homegoing services.

Darin was diagnosed in 2020, but by the time of his diagnosis, the cancer had already reached Stage 4—meaning he likely had it for some time before finding out. I urge all men: pay attention to your bodies and go to the doctor when needed. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Please get your regular checkups, including prostate exams, and make sure your PSA levels are included in your bloodwork. If you have a family history, let your doctor know, as it increases your risk.

Black men, I especially urge you—too many of you are being lost to this disease.

Although Darin told a few people about his diagnosis, he didn’t tell me or our other brother until July 12th. Just over a month later, on August 21st, he was gone. According to his doctors, the chemo and radiation he received allowed him to live for the five years he did. Sadly, the cancer eventually advanced so much that his bone marrow stopped functioning, leaving him unable to continue treatment.

If the cancer had been found earlier, before it advanced, he could have been cured—and he could still be here today. Early detection is key!

Darin was a dad, a grandpa, an uncle, a brother, a cousin, a friend, a coach, a baseball fanatic, a church member, a neighbor, that T-shirt guy and so much more. Because of Prostate Cancer, there is now a painful void.

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Ladies get familiar with the symptoms and risk factors as there are no test for early detection. Please pay attention to your bodies, go to the doctor for symptoms and annual physical exams, and advocate for yourself with your health providers.

Saturday My Girls, Inc. Bigger Picture Youth MOVE Chapter attended the 1st Annual Youth MOVE Family Reunion, hosted by Youth MOVE Georgia and the Georgia Parent Support Network! We had a time from listening to the inspiring speakers & poet, enjoying fun and engaging activities, winning great prizes, getting meaningful gifts, and eating delicious food and delectable desserts by Sue Smith. After the family reunion we got a chance to tour “House of Hope” Youth Peer Support Program and Street Outreach Program by Georgia Support Network and we fell in love with it. The House o Hope is so warm and welcoming. It’s equipped with so many essentials and more to support youth with various needs. The youth in My Girls, Inc. didnt want to leave.❤️
