As an EMS and CPR instructor, it always blows my mind when I ask students, "Aren't a heart attack and cardiac arrest the same thing?" and they say yes... The right answer is NO.

Simple Explanation:
A heart attack happens when blood flow to part of the heart muscle is blocked, usually by a clot in a heart vessel or artery. The heart is beating and the person has a pulse, but the muscle is being damaged due to lack of oxygen. The person has symptoms (symptoms are derived from the person speaking to you, because symptoms come from the victim) including I have chest pain, I have shortness of breath, I feel nausea... No CPR is needed.

On the other hand-.

When someone has a cardiac arrest, their heart's electrical system goes haywire, making their heart suddenly stop beating – no heartbeat, no pulse, and they can't tell you what's happening. Blood flow to their brain and body immediately stops, they collapse, become unresponsive, and will die in minutes without CPR and AED or defibrillation.

But remember this:
A heart attack can cause cardiac arrest, but a lot of cardiac arrests happen without a heart attack, and a lot of heart attacks don't cause cardiac arrest.
