Each year on November 10, we observe World Immunization Day to raise awareness about the lifesaving power of vaccines. Immunization is one of the most effective and affordable ways to prevent disease and protect public health. Vaccines help safeguard individuals and communities from illnesses that could otherwise result in serious health complications and costly medical care.

How to Participate:
1. Get Vaccinated
Make sure you’re up to date on all recommended vaccines, including both doses (and boosters, if applicable) of the COVID-19 vaccine. Staying current with immunizations protects you and those around you.

2. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle
A balanced diet supports overall wellness and strengthens your immune system. Consider meeting with a nutritionist to create a personalized healthy eating plan.

3. Spread Awareness
Encourage others to get vaccinated by sharing credible information and your own vaccination story on social media.

5 Facts About Vaccines

-Vaccines Save Lives – They prevent more than 2.5 million deaths worldwide each year.

-They Create Herd Immunity – When most people are vaccinated, diseases have less chance to spread, protecting even those who aren’t vaccinated.

-Measles Deaths Have Dropped Dramatically – Global measles deaths declined by 78% between 2000 and 2008 thanks to widespread vaccination.

-Meningitis Has Been Nearly Eliminated – Since the introduction of the meningitis vaccine in 1988, cases have fallen by 99%.

-Not All Vaccines Require Shots – Some vaccines can be taken orally, offering an easy and painless way to build immunity.

Happy Halloween from the DOH!

🎃 Keep Kids Safe This Halloween!

Avoid the most common Halloween injuries—like falls, vehicle collisions, and eye injuries from sharp props. Follow these tips to make sure your little ghouls and goblins enjoy a night full of treats—no tricks!

👀 See and Be Seen
-Trick-or-treat in well-lit, familiar neighborhoods with sidewalks.
-The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that children 12 and under be accompanied by an adult.
-Skip masks that block vision—try a properly fitted hat and nontoxic face paint instead.
-Use flashlights, headlamps, reflective tape, or glow accessories so drivers can easily see you.
-Cross streets safely: look both ways and use crosswalks. Avoid running between parked cars.
-Trick-or-treat in groups and before dark when possible.
-Only visit homes with porch lights on, and never go inside for treats.

🕸️ Safe Spooking
-Choose soft, flexible props instead of sharp ones.
-Make sure costumes and shoes fit well to prevent tripping.
-Inspect all treats before eating. Watch for allergens, choking hazards, or unwrapped candy. Discard anything questionable.

🧛 Tips for Older Trick-or-Treaters

-Plan a safe route together before they head out.
-Set a specific return time.
-Ensure they carry a cell phone and know how to call 9-1-1 if they get lost or have an emergency.

Have a GREAT night!
