Well, you just never know what kind of mischief the Joyology Department will get into here at Griggs County Care Center in Cooperstown, North Dakota!
This week, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our fabulous female residents got together with a pile of donated bras (thank you to the thrift store) to create something beautiful, creative, sparkly, and full of heart.
Now—let us set the scene. When we told the ladies we’d be “decorating bras,” one resident came struttin’ in clutching her sweater tight and whispering, “Well, I sure hope nobody minds if mine’s a little lived-in!”
Another took her seat and began lifting her shirt. Once we explained that we’d be decorating extra bras—NOT the ones currently in use—the room erupted in laughter, glue sticks fired up, and feathers started flying like a Vegas showgirl convention!
By the end, we had bras that looked like Mardi Gras met a Hallmark movie. A sweet woman who lost her precious husband said, "My husband wouldn't have liked me in this bra I decorated."
When we asked why, she replied, "Because, he was a Swede! Swedes don't like all this stuff on bras." Rhinestones, ribbons, bobbles, and glitter galore! They used the pink ribbon Breast Cancer Awareness themed pins too! Then—because we clearly weren’t done making history—we decided to create our very own Breast Cancer Awareness Music Rap!
And let me tell you, when you hear our residents shout “WORD TO YOUR MOTHER!” at the end… just know, in rap language, that means they are being dead serious about this cause.
This year’s theme is “Every story is unique and every journey matters.” One of our beautiful residents has kept her breast cancer in remission for years—doing it her way. Her courage reminds us all to celebrate every survivor, support every fighter, and honor every angel we’ve loved and lost.
So please—get your mammograms, check yourself, and take care of your body. Early detection saves lives,... and laughter helps heal hearts.
*Watch the video in comments! Get these ladies a rap agent! Get ready to smile big, and remember- we may be small-town North Dakota, but our spirit is large enough to fill the sky with pink confetti.
Visit our clinic registration area for fun Breast Cancer Awareness photo opportunities!

The end of the week at Griggs County Care Center in Cooperstown, ND was ripe for being silly!
We took out the banana phone. Brendan is such a card! He really played it up for the camera!
Who needs a smartphone when ya got a smart-fruit?

PS... Please help us get enough candy or trinkets for the residents to bless the kids with on Halloween. You can mail it or drop it off.
We need a lot!

Today in the Joyology Department at Griggs County Care Center… things got a little spooky — and a whole lot punchy!
We decided to host another Halloween-themed game day, and let us tell you — it was boo-tifully chaotic in all the right ways! Our amazing maintenance team joined in on the fun after hearing one of Jodi Rae’s “visions” (the kind that usually begins with, “Now, just hear me out…”). They didn’t hesitate a second — next thing we knew, they were screwing a whole bunch of red Solo cups to a giant board like seasoned game show engineers.
Each cup was filled with treasures ranging from fruit snacks and candy bars to warm fuzzy slipper socks, $10 Bingo Bucks, and even a little jewelry! Then we covered them with white napkins, rubber-banded them tight, and drew spooky ghost faces or words like “Boo!” and “Eek!” on them. The result? A masterpiece of Halloween fun we called “Punch a Ghost — Pick a Prize!” (Say that using the same enthusiasm of Bob Barker!)
When the residents gathered in the main room, we blasted upbeat game show music and rolled out the red carpet of ridiculousness. Nadine stepped into her role as a perfectly believable Vanna White, while Jodi Rae played the host. Each contestant was dramatically introduced. They spoke into a hand held microphone answering the host's questions just like on real TV game shows! They weren't being shy before they got to punch a ghost square in its little paper face — something, we might add, that’s very satisfying when you live in a nursing home and don’t often get the chance to take your frustrations out physically. (And the best part? You actually win a prize for punching in this activity —and not handcuffs!) No bail money needed!
Our gentlemen residents especially enjoyed the game… a few even flexed their “ghost-busting” biceps before delivering a mighty wallop to their chosen spirit. Ghosts didn’t stand a chance!
After all that excitement, we dimmed the lights low and transitioned to peace and tranquility with Tai Chi Chair Exercises. The spa music floated through the air as twenty pairs of hands and arms moved gracefully in rhythm — like a gentle ballet of ghosts who had decided haunting was much too stressful and chose the inner peace of Tai Chi instead.
And before and after our activities, the card-playing crew gathered again — we’re not entirely sure what game they’re playing, but they sure look serious about it. (Poker? Go Fish? Paranormal Uno?)
All in all, it was another day of laughter, movement, prizes, and pure joy at Griggs County Care Center — proof that even in a nursing home, life can still be full of surprises, silliness, and sweet moments (sometimes literally sweet — thanks to the candy!).

🍬 Calling all candy donors!
We’re gearing up for our big Halloween with the Kiddos event, and we need lots and lots of candy to make it magical for our residents and visiting children. If you’d like to or can donate, please drop off your candy at the Care Center in the Activities Dept. anytime this week! The party is the afternoon of the 31st! 🍬🍫🍭
Because here at GCCC, we believe there’s nothing more joyful than ghosts, sharing giggles with each other and the Littles, and a good sugar rush!
Thank you all for taking the time to view our days through our posts!

The baking club at Griggs County Care Center in Cooperstown, ND melted together to make Halloween popcorn cake!
You must consider making this for you and your most loved ones!
We mixed freshly popped popcorn with the most decadent stuff! First we melted an entire pound of butter and stirred in enough fresh marshmallows to mix it into a fluffy, puffy cloud of scrumptiousness. Next we added in some melted almond bark. We poured that into the popcorn as we added candy corns for a textured, sweet surprise in each bite. Uffda was that a muscle builder to stir!
We topped it off with adding Halloween cookie sprinkles of orange, green, black, purple and white!
We packed it all in to 9 x 13 pans sprayed with non-stick spray.
Guess how many pans we made? THREE!
Umm, that's a lot! We knew we had made enough to last a few days!
Guess how many pans we ate during coffee shop?
THREE!
We're telling you! This was a sweet, salty, moist, divine, easy to eat treat!

Some residents pleaded for seconds but there were none left. They were just that yummy!
We plan to make things like this for every holiday now!
Delores had fun eating plain popcorn with butter today.
Our caregivers do so much more then just personal cares. Today they helped serve. They marched up the hallways insuring everyone got to experience what the baking club created today!
Tomorrow's activity ( in order to stick to the Halloween theme).....
*Pick an eyeball-roll a dice. If the numbers match... Pick a prize! * 👀 🎲 🏆
The baking club is excited to show you their next creation!

This morning at GCCC, we kicked off the day with a surprise that had everyone smiling before breakfast was even digested! We told the residents we’d be doing something special, but nobody guessed they’d be picking out fingernail polish colors for pumpkins!
Yes, you read that right — Pumpkin Dunkin was in full swing! We lined a 5-gallon bucket with a plastic bag, filled it with water, and had each resident choose their favorite nail polish shades. Then we dumped their color into the water. When everyone shouted “Abracadabra Alakazam!”, out loud and in unison- our fearless Activity Director dunked the pumpkin right into the swirling polish—and out came the most stunning, marbled masterpieces you’ve ever seen! (Martha Stewart herself would’ve fainted on the spot.)
We encouraged more color combos, more dipping, and more laughter—and later, we let the sun shine through the window to dry our glamorous gourds. If you stop by, be sure to check out our dazzling display of designer pumpkins.
Then came our Exercise & Praise session before lunch—a little bit of modern pop music (because there’s a time for hymns, and then there’s a time for Justin Timberlake and Salt-n-Pepa). The staff started dancing, the residents started moving, and before long it looked like we were hosting “Dancing with the Stars: Nursing Home Edition.” The energy was sky-high and the smiles were contagious!
We wrapped it up by taking prayer requests, lifting each other up, praying for our staff, our dietary team, those in need of healing, and our great nation. And let me tell you—when our residents yell “AMEN!”—the angels and the kitchen staff know it’s time for lunch!
After lunch, Megan Shimenek and her crew surprised everyone at Coffee Shop with strawberry ice cream (with real strawberries!) and all the toppings imaginable were theirs for the choosing.
Orville Ramsey, fueled by sugar and sunshine, decided to take a walk and discovered his shadow friends! We waved, they waved back, and followed us all the way inside for hot chocolate. Well, that's actually when they skeedaddled but we'd had enough of those two anyways!
Meanwhile, our towel folders gathered for their sacred folding session (the Vatican has nothing on this level of devotion), and the ladies were gifted handmade bracelets from a kind elder of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Tribe in Belcourt, ND. Each bracelet was made with love and fit perfectly—talk about divine timing! The ladies played Kings Corners afterward, showing off their new bling like queens at a card table.
We capped off the day by rolling a cart of milk and candy bars around (hydration and happiness!) and closed with a big group singalong of “You Are My Sunshine” in perfect harmony.
As far as days go… this one was filled with color, kindness, laughter, and love.
From pumpkins to prayer, from pop music to peace—we call that a perfect day at Griggs County Care Center.

Today at Griggs County Care Center in Cooperstown, ND... In keeping with the theme of the upcoming Halloween, we named our Wednesday Bingo today, "Howling Bingo! “ Like wolves howl at the full moon, we instructed the residents playing that if they got a BINGO - they had to howl instead of yelling" BINGO! "
The Activity Director counted to three just so everyone could practice their loudest howl!
Laughter erupted and the game began.
The first winner let out a noise! If you were anywhere near Cooperstown today and suspected you heard a sound that sounded like a bull frog in heat - that was likely just our first resident daring to howl for the first time in decades! Laughter erupted as the winner learned they had a good BINGO!
Game after game we heard new howls. One sounded like an opera singer with a cough drop stuck in their throat. Laughter erupted.
The best howl went on for a good 30 seconds! Cheryl Ellefson won the howling contest hands down with that elongated sound! Laughter erupted!
These mostly Norwegian residents felt wild and free today howling at BINGO together under a still, mostly full moon, drinking coffee and erupting in laughter at the silliness of it all! We tried to decide what each howl sounded like which added to the hilarity of it all! We are sad we didn't get it on video! You'd of erupted with us!
Have you tried howling lately? Here's your chance!
1,2,3..........
We erupt in laughter often here!
We're excited for the upcoming, "BOO" BINGO!
Stay tuned!

First we said, "Good morning" to each other and then it was ON!
We gathered to make eyeball cupcakes! One resident got scared when we asked her. She said, “Do we have to use MY eyeballs to make them? " Reassurance was offered expeditiously! No human eyeballs would be harmed during this fun-to-make and bake activity!
Staff gets all of the ingredients together and then encourages the residents do all of the baking. Independence is something that we encourage greatly at GCCC. From cracking the eggs to pouring oil, water, stirring and preparing the cupcake holders. They did it all!
We exercised and prayed before leaving to a scrumptious lunch.
Next up was Coffee Shop. But this time, it was coffee shop hour with a surprise!
We served Happy Hour with 3 flavors of wine coolers and NDSU beer! UND fans refused! Team loyalty is a real thing!
But THEN: What we THOUGHT would be of interest only to the men turned into a taste testing frenzy!
We served exotic jerky!
Residents got to choose what they'd like to try.
Ostrich
Wild Boar
Alligator
Buffalo
Venison and of all things,
Kangaroo!
We can testify that they tasted quite alike but their textures were very different!
The wild boar was the softest and the alligator was the toughest!
A whole lot more happened after that but... We'll leave you alone to process all of this!
... Ya never know what we're going to do next!

🥹Look! You can see it!
But staff at Griggs County Care Center in Cooperstown, ND can FEEL her in them!
We see our beloved Karen Johnson wearing every one of the sweatshirts sewn into this quilt held up by two, tall, male residents who loved her so! She wore each sweatshirt so proudly and looked so incredibly cute in them!
We feel her compassionate, empathetic DNA in the fabric she once wore. And then we remember her in love all over again!
This remarkable, meaningful quilt was crafted by another woman named Karen-Karen Hornung and given to Karen Johnson's sister, Nancy Painter.
Nancy must have known we all needed a dose of Karen... She lent it to all of us. It worked!
Nearly never a day goes by without one of us asking, "What would Karen do?"
Once we figure it out-we do that because she just instinctively knew what to do. Even if it wasn't written. She invented ways to care.
Thank you Karen H. for this gift of memory. A quilt should warm a human. In this case, it comforted and warmed all of us!

The residents made their very own, personal Chex Mix for midnight snack times! This could be one of the favorite activities from this point on!
They each got one Ziploc bag to start with.
We put each yummy in different containers. Next, the gloves went on.
They chose:
Pretzels, Rice Chex cereal, peanut butter chips, Goldfish crackers, milk chocolate chips, nuts, butterscotch chips and cheese flavored Bugles!
This was a person-centered activity. Everyone created different mixes to fit their specific taste.
The salty, mixed with the sweet and all the different textures excited everyone's pallets!
We're really excited to change up the options for each holiday too!
Are you hungry? Got snacks!
