March 4 is HPV Awareness Day in Oregon.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is very common and easily spread. Nearly all people will be infected with HPV at some point in their life.

There are many types of HPV that can infect different areas of the body. Some types cause warts in the ge***al area and other types can lead to cancer on the cervix, v***a, a**s, p***s, mouth and throat.

Most HPV-related cancers can be prevented with the HPV vaccine starting between the ages of 9 and 12.

Talk to your health care provider about the HPV vaccine.

The number of Oregon adults who drink excessively is more than most of us may realize— more than 1 in 5. The consequences are bigger, too. Most people in this group are not affected by alcoholism or alcohol use disorder.

But, by drinking excessively, you may increase your risk of developing an alcohol use disorder later in life. It’s easy to cross the line into higher-risk drinking without realizing, especially when drinking this way is normalized in our society. Noticing when drinking starts to shift can help.

Drinking less alcohol is easier said than done, especially when we're hanging out with others. If social pressure is one of the reasons you find yourself drinking more than you’d like, consider finding alternative ways to meet with friends instead of over drinks – take a walk, go for a hike, play pickleball.

Let us know your favorite activities that don't involve alcohol in the comments!

When it’s cold in Oregon, respiratory illnesses such as the flu, colds and strep throat become more common.

Cold weather does not directly cause illness, but winter conditions help viruses spread more easily.

Here are some steps you can take to help keep you and your family healthy this winter.

Ask your health care provider or local pharmacy for more information on getting seasonal respiratory vaccines.

You can also search for a clinic by ZIP code at vaccinefinder.org.
