October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! πŸŽ€

Did you know 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime? Early detection saves lives! If you're 40 or older, talk to your provider about when it’s right for you to schedule your yearly mammograms.πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ

Remember to be breast health aware and know what's normal for you. And although it’s rare, men can get breast cancer, too. Ask your provider if you’re at risk.

Meet our nurse Shayla Stidham πŸ’–, coordinator of Coquille Valley Hospital’s Medicare Wellness Program πŸ₯.

The annual Medicare Wellness exam 🩺 differs from an annual physical exam, focusing instead on each patient’s personalized healthcare plan to help prevent disease or disability as they age. It's for patients who have been on Medicare Part B healthcare insurance for more than a year.

Shayla is happy to put patients in touch with any resources they might need and also stresses the importance of staying active.

β€œWe make sure we have closed all the healthcare gaps, as far as preventative care is concerned,” Shayla says. β€œWe have time for things that providers typically don’t have during their regular visit.”

Halloween will be here before we know it! πŸŽƒ For a frightfully fun holiday, talk with your little ghouls πŸ’€ and goblins πŸ‘» about how to be safe on Halloween and follow these simple steps for trick-or-treating:

πŸŽƒ Plan costumes that are bright and reflective, or add reflective tape.
πŸŽƒ Make sure shoes fit well and costumes are short enough to prevent tripping.
πŸŽƒ Look for the words β€œflame resistant” on costume labels, wigs and accessories.
πŸŽƒ Avoid sharp or long swords, canes, sticks or masks as a costume accessory.
πŸŽƒ Don't use decorative contact lenses; these can cause serious infections and injuries.
πŸŽƒ Ensure your porch and walkways are well-lit, and remove trip hazards.
πŸŽƒ Always accompany young children and hold hands when crossing the road.
πŸŽƒ Only go to homes with a porch light on and never enter a home or car for a treat.
πŸŽƒ Wait until children are home to sort and check treats.

Have a safe and healthy Halloween season!

When was the last time you had a good laugh? πŸ˜…

Not only is it good to share a laugh with someone β€” it's good for your mental health, too! According to the Easton Center for Alzheimer's Research and Care at UCLA, laughter provides many benefits. Here are a few:

πŸ˜† It relaxes your body.
🀣 It boosts the immune system.
😹 It triggers the release of endorphins, which are feel-good chemicals in your body.
πŸ˜‚ It defuses anger.
πŸ˜„ It strengthens your relationships.

Whether you watch one of your favorite comedians, research some silly "Dad" jokes or notice something amusing in your everyday happenings, enjoy laughing! It's worth it!

Think of your health like maintaining your car. You wouldn't skip an oil change, right? Regular checkups for your body are just as important, even when you feel perfectly fine! πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈπŸ”§

An annual visit with your provider isn't just for when you're sick. It's one of the best ways to stay ahead of the game. Here's why regular checkups are smart:

πŸ‘€ Early Detection: Catch potential issues like high blood pressure, cholesterol or blood sugar before they become serious problems.
🩺 Preventive Care: It's your chance to talk about lifestyle, manage stress, get needed vaccinations and discuss cancer screenings.
🀝 Build a Partnership: Establishing a relationship with a provider means you have a trusted expert on your team if and when you do get sick.

Whether you're under 40 or over 65, there's a recommended timeline for your checkups. Learn more: https://bit.ly/46OV5Lw
