Before the name Miami Counseling and Resource Center ever appeared on a sign, the practice was a constellation of smaller programs: the Women’s Resource and Counseling Center, the Agoraphobia Resource Center, the Anorexia and Bulimia Resource Center, and later, the Divorce and Family Counseling Center. Each one emerged in response to a gap in care and became a place where people could find real support.

Over the years, MCRC has welcomed psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, mental health counselors, psychiatrists, and registered dietitians. While the team has grown and changed, the practice has always prioritized both clinical skill and the human connection that makes therapy meaningful.

Discover the origins of Miami Counseling and Resource Center through the stories of the early programs that came together to create it.

OCD manifests in ways that often feel too taboo to discuss.

Harm obsessions, sexual intrusive thoughts, and moral fears are common presentations people rarely talk about. The secrecy becomes part of the disorder itself, reinforcing isolation and delaying treatment.

Despite different themes, all OCD presentations share the same mechanics: intolerance for uncertainty, attempts to prevent feared outcomes, and compulsive behaviors to reduce distress.

The good news is, therapy can help.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) typically develops after experiencing or witnessing a specific traumatic event, while Complex PTSD (CPTSD) results from prolonged, repeated trauma exposure. Vicarious trauma can trigger symptoms similar to both conditions: intrusive thoughts, hypervigilance, sleep disturbances, emotional numbness and isolation, and persistent anxiety about your own safety and the safety of others.

These responses make evolutionary sense. Our brains are wired to respond to threats in our environment, and when we repeatedly witness or hear about danger befalling people in our community, our nervous systems remain on high alert.

Vicarious trauma occurs when witnessing others' pain impacts your mental health. Find out how trauma-informed therapy helps process these normal responses to abnormal circumstances.

For many people, food carries emotional weight. It can be tied to stress, control, comfort, or shame. When eating becomes chaotic through chronic dieting, binge eating, or rigid food rules, the effects extend far beyond the body.

Healing your relationship with food is about learning to trust your body again and recognizing that nourishing yourself is an act of care.

For some couples, the conflict isn’t really about the issues at all. Political disagreements become a proxy for other relationship tensions. Arguments about education policy often reflect underlying tensions about parenting priorities and how partners think resources should be allocated. Disagreements about healthcare policy can surface deeper differences around caregiving expectations and personal responsibility. Therapy helps couples distinguish between genuine political disagreement and conflict that’s using them as a vehicle.

Relationship strain from political disagreements can feel personal, but therapy offers tools to navigate differences with respect, communication skills, and shared purpose.

Given that approximately 9% of the U.S. population will experience an eating disorder in their lifetime, understanding the markers for these conditions is crucial to helping people recognize when it’s time to seek support. And while understanding diagnostic criteria can be clarifying, the decision to seek therapy shouldn’t hinge on whether your experience aligns perfectly with textbook definitions.

How are eating disorders diagnosed? Explore the five main diagnoses, treatment considerations, and when to seek therapy for disordered eating patterns.

This year, for eating disorders awareness week we want to call attention to what often gets missed.

Public understanding of eating disorders is often shaped by narrow narratives that focus on appearance instead of experience. But in reality, eating disorders are more complex, more diverse, and more insidious than those stereotypes allow. When we expand our lens beyond the body and toward the behaviors, patterns, and contexts that surround food, a clearer picture begins to emerge.
