Stay Safe Florida!!!

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
1. Every home must have at least one phone that works without electricity (the corded phones). This way, in case of an outage, you’ll have access to a phone.
2. Make sure your cell phones are fully charged. Save the cells for important calls; don’t use them for conversations that can wait until after the hurricane.
3. It’s always a good idea to have a battery-operated radio to keep track of the storm.
4. If you store water in bathtubs for baths, etc., add a couple of caps of bleach to prevent the buildup of algae.
5. Turn your fridge & freezer to the coldest setting so that if electricity goes off, your food can last relatively longer. It’s always a good idea to put an extra gallon of milk and bread in the
freezer to give them longevity. Add a few containers of water to make ice.
6. Buy foods like muffins, cakes, cookies, cereals, bread, jam, peanut butter, bagels, fruits, ready-made puddings, jello etc to have readily available foods in case of an outage. Canned foods: macaroni & cheese, corn, carrots, mixed vegetables, baked beans, tuna, shredded chicken, salmon etc. Drinks: water & soda can last without electricity.
7. Don’t forget the paper plates and cups, spoons etc.
8. Make sure you have plenty of drinking water.
9. Depending on your area, if you decide that shutters on windows are not needed, make sure that blinds and drapes cover the windows. In case a window breaks, blinds and curtains can prevent the glass from flying into the house.
10. If your bed happens to be next to a window, pull the bed away from it before you go to sleep. 11. All doors and windows should be tightly shut. Loose windows have a higher tendency to crack. 12. Remember to bring all patio furniture indoors including any planters or other items that could be projectiles into your windows and sliding doors. If any furniture seems to be too heavy to be brought inside, just turn it upside down to decrease the chances of damage.
13. Loose roof tiles from your house or your neighbor’s houses can also fly into your windows and sliding doors. So we all have an obligation to make sure our roofs are clear of any loose
materials.
14. Let your AC run cold all day before the hurricane so that if there is an outage, your home will stay cool for a longer time.
15. Remember to stock up on flashlights and batteries.
16. Of course, fill up your vehicles with gas.
17. If you have generators, make sure it is outside the house and stock up on gas and motor oil.
18. Place a carbon monoxide detector inside the house, closest to the generator that is outside. 18. It’s always a good idea to have a set of propane burners for cooking in an outage. You’ll find good ones on the internet on “camping goods websites” for $ 29.99 and up. If you have one of these, or a grill, stock up on propane tanks.
19. Make sure you have enough medication to last you until after the storm.
20. If you are on oxygen, remember to have plenty of backup tanks.
21. It is always a good idea to shower, do your laundry, etc., and cook before a storm hits so that you have some readily available food for the next day or two. Cook foods that can be eaten cold.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!!!🎄🎅🏼

The Christmas Coat

An old man was fumbling around one day
In a women’s clothing store,
He’d found his wife a Christmas coat
And was headed for the door……
When he bumped into a little boy
That looked like he was lost
And he said, “Mister, can you help me
Find out how much something costs?’

‘Here it is almost Christmas
And the nights are gettin' cold,
Wintertime is on us
And my mom don’t have a coat,
I’ve been workin' for the neighbors
And saving for some time”
And in his tiny outstretched hand
Was a dollar and a dime.

His gaze went from that big-eyed boy
To that pretty Christmas coat,
And he finally cleared away the lump
That had gathered in his throat,
He said, “Son, that’s just what this coat costs
We’re lucky that we found ‘er”
And he turned around and gave a wink
To the lady at the counter.

She put it in a pretty box
And wrapped it up just so,
And went off in the back
And found a big red Christmas bow,
He said, “I thank you for your help, sir
And I kindly thank you, ma’am;
I hope y’all are gonna have a big Christmas
Cause now I know I am!”

Well, the old man walked home busted
Except for the dollar and the dime,
Thinking he’d just have to buy
The coat another time,
He told his wife that Christmas this year
Wouldn’t be much fun,
And he gently took her in his arms
And told her what he’d done.

She said, “Why, you old softie
I wouldn’t trade you for a farm,
I’ve got two or three old coats with me
And your love to keep me warm!“
She put that money in a matchbox
And placed it beneath their tree,
And said, “That is the grandest sweetest gift
You’ve ever given me!”

The years went by like years will do
When people are in love,
Their marriage was a golden bond
That was forged by God above;
Then, one day came some bitter news
That filled his heart with fright
The doctor told the old man’s wife
That she was going to lose her sight!

He said, “There’s an operation we can do
But it puts me on the spot….
Cause it’s quite a complex procedure
And it’s going to cost a lot.”
The old man said “Doctor I’m a failure
I’ve made no preparation……
We don’t have the money
For that kind of an operation”

The doctor had the strangest look
And he sat there for a while,
And then he slowly nodded
And he broke out in a smile…..
He said, “Why sir, you can’t fool me
You’re a very wealthy man!
You long ago invested
In the world’s best savings plan”

I’ll see she gets the best of care
She’s going to be just fine!
And the total cost to you old friend
Is a dollar and a dime”
The old man stared in disbelief
Then he recognized that smile…..
The one he’d seen those years ago
On a loving, thoughtful child…..

The man said, “What you gave me that day,
Was more than just a coat,
You gave me the gift of giving
And you gave my mother hope!
My mother's been mistreated
Neglected and abused,
But she gave life just one more chance
And it was all because of you ❤️❤️

Now, every year, she takes that coat
And lays it beneath our tree,
It represents to us the things
That Christmas ought to be.
She says that when we leave this world
For a better home someday,
The only things that we’ll take with us
Are the things we gave away”

The director of the George Washington University School of Medicine maintains that the brain of an elderly person is much more practical than is commonly believed. At this age, the interaction of the left and right hemispheres of the brain becomes harmonious, which expands our creative possibilities. That is why among people over the age of 60 you can find many personalities who have just started their creative activities.
Of course, the brain is no longer as fast as it was in youth. However, it gains in flexibility. Therefore, with age, we are more likely to make the right decisions and less exposed to negative emotions. The peak of human intellectual activity occurs around the age of 70, when the brain begins to work in full force.
Over time, the amount of myelin in the brain increases, a substance that facilitates the rapid passage of signals between neurons. Due to this, intellectual abilities increase by 300% compared to the average.
Also interesting is the fact that after 60 years a person can use 2 hemispheres at the same time. This allows you to solve much more complex problems.
Professor Monchi Uri, from the University of Montreal, believes that the elderly brain chooses the path that consumes less energy, eliminates the unnecessary and leaves only the right options to solve the problem. A study was conducted in which different age groups participated. The young people were very confused while passing the tests, while those over 60 years old made the right decisions.
Now, let's look at the characteristics of the brain between the ages of 60 and 80. They are really pink.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BRAIN OF AN OLDER PERSON.
1. The neurons of the brain do not die, as everyone around you says. The connections between them simply disappear if one does not engage in mental work.
2. Distraction and forgetfulness arise due to an overabundance of information. Therefore, you do not need to focus your whole life on unnecessary trifles.
3. From the age of 60, a person when making decisions does not use only one hemisphere of the brain, like young people, but both.
4. Conclusion: if a person leads a healthy lifestyle, is mobile, has viable physical activity and is fully mentally active, intellectual abilities DO NOT decline with age, they simply GROW, reaching a peak at the age of 80-90 years.
HEALTHY TIPS:
1) Don't be afraid of old age.
2) Strive to develop intellectually.
3) Learn new crafts!
4) Take an interest in life, meet and communicate with friends, make plans for the future, travel as best you can.
5) Don't forget to go to shops, cafes, shows.
6) Don't shut up alone, it's destructive for anyone.
7) Be positive, always live with the thought: following: "all good things are still ahead of me!"

Hats off to staff at Sunshine for always doing such an amazing job! So blessed to have staff members who go above and beyond to take care of the residents and the entire facility👍🏼🏆❤️💝 -

Heartfelt gratitude to family members for entrusting their loved ones in our care and for these special words of praise. We are humbled.

"At age 94 my mother became a resident of Sunshine Assisted Living on December 11, 2018. She and I visited 5 assisted living facilities in our area. She selected Sunshine because it was a smaller private facility and the number of staff assigned to care for the six residents was a bit higher than others we looked at. She would rather be at home but she is comfortable there and treated as a family member by the staff on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week! This level care and supervision is exactly what she needs at this point in her life.

The facility is beautiful, warm, bright and always clean. A nutritionist complies a weekly menu of healthy, nutritious and according to my mother, delicious food. Of course, she loves all the snacks too! My mother was in the hospital a few months back and had lost weight during her stay. After returning to Sunshine, she started to gain weight and was quickly back to her normal weight. The staff also encourage drinking plenty of fluids for healthy hydration each day.

Bathrooms are designed with safety seats and rails. The doors are kept locked and are alarmed. There are cameras located at appropriate locations in the facility. The facility has an electric power generator to handle any power outages.

The staff at Sunshine are terrific. They take their responsibility to care for all the residents very seriously. They provide my mother with three meals a day, bathing, dressing, medicine dispensing and any other personal need she may require. They do this and more with a smile and treat all the residence with respect. The work for the facility has been magnified with the advent of Covid-19.

The owner and her staff have been very protective of the residents. Even with all the extra work required, the owner and her staff have been especially helpful to family members. All the residents are very well taken care of and seem content with the kind and caring staff. It is clear the seniors are enjoying this peaceful living environment.

My mother selected Sunshine and I am so very happy with her decision!"
