💙 A Story of Perseverance and Progress 💙
When this sweet baby girls with Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) came to see us at 3 weeks old, feeding at the breast was hard work. Babies with Down syndrome often face extra challenges like low muscle tone, a less coordinated suck, and tiring more quickly during feeds.
Research shows that while many babies with Down syndrome start breastfeeding — initiation rates in studies range from about 50–90% — far fewer are able to continue exclusively breastfeeding long term, often closer to 30–40%. Those numbers reflect how tough it can be… but also how much support truly matters.
With patience, follow-up, and small steps forward, this incredible mom and baby made huge progress. Now at 9 weeks, this little one is transferring full feedings at the breast and gaining beautifully! 💪📈
At Little Sprout Lactation Care, we believe breastfeeding support shouldn’t be a one-time fix — it’s an ongoing journey. Consistent follow-up and care from an IBCLC make a big difference in long-term success. Each visit builds on the last, helping families adapt, grow, and stay confident through every stage.
This dyad’s story is a reminder that with the right guidance and continued support, success can look beautifully different for every family. 🌱💛
