Diabetic retinopathy, a condition that may occur in people who have diabetes, can cause progressive damage to the retina. Tiny retinal blood vessels damaged by diabetes leak blood and other fluids, causing retinal tissue to swell and resulting in cloudy or blurred vision.

According to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, diabetes could impact memory and other cognitive functions.

“Diabetes may be altering the brain similarly to early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Further research is needed, but these findings have the potential to help researchers unlock clues to improved diagnostic or treatment strategies for the disease,” said the study’s lead researcher.
